| encrypted data - backup to dvd Nov 1 2009 on group MANDRIVA LOVERS | still no wasy way to perform this process. i've not achieved success running realcrypt or truecrypt on mandriva. been attempting to backup to a LUKS DVD but so far, can't perform any methods suggested on the web.
basically - how can i take encrypted data from Hard drive and backup to CD or DVD?
mandriva users had the option before 2009 of using mountloop (with an easy GUI drakloop) which did the job perfectly. but now we are left stranded without any alternatives. any suggestions? |
| | | Re: Re: Re: Re: 2009 is good but Dec 26 2008 on group MANDRIVA LOVERS | what i meant was is realcrypt reliant on TRUECRYPT (not LUKS) - i think it is the same thing only a different GUI. but i am stupid so don't take my word. |
| | | Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 2009 is good but Dec 26 2008 on group MANDRIVA LOVERS | thank you KIND sir. it's an inconvenience = i and many others have been considering ways around dealing with it. Truecrypt seems like the best way to go. What i need is a secure encrypted home and root and a portable option that moves across different Operating Systems if possible and which i can burn to DVD. LUKS with Truecrypt for burning seemed to be an option but if u read further down here, you will see the trouble with LUKS on fedora 9 and truecrypt on Mandriva and fedora as well. There isn't an easy way to install truecrypt even on fedora and real crypt is "going soon".
REALLY considering OpenSuse or Ubuntu unstead of all this, and alredy working on taking my iBook back to Tiger with SECURE RELIABLE ENCRYPTION FROM MAC and Truecrypt.dmg
Sad but stupidly true. |
| | | Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: 2009 is good but Dec 26 2008 on group MANDRIVA LOVERS | "carrots and dogs and my donkey and my ass. I am not comparing anything to anything. I have read countless release notes after mandriva 2008. I am stating my woes (which i have seen are the woes of many out here). I am very aware of mountloop being a mandriva EXPERIMENT that may have gone sour (kernel or not; users are left stranded or in serious difficulty after using a tool provided by Mandriva distro. Period.
I am aware that LUKS encryption is possible on any distro, only that Fedora 9 installer made it very easy (EVEN for someone as stupid as myself who compares dogs to oranges).
NOW FOR AN Season 2 of thsi series: A Fedora 9 update destroyed my LUKS header so that i lost all my data on a partition. this is the conclusioon I have reached because that's what happened. When rebooting I was met with a message that NO KEY EXISTS FOR THAT PASSPHRASE. So.. I removed fedora 9 and tried MAndriva 2009.0 (back to the dogs from the lemons - stupid me)
Before this happened, I decided to use Truecrypt on Fedora because Realcrypt GUI at first was so hard to install and using it from console is too complex for me right now (sorry, I'M STUPID). Now the good news is that Realcrypt will vanish off the face of the planet due to licencing issues and there will be no Truecrypt without complex building from source as from 2009.1
Realcrypt doesn't even work properly on 2009.0 - none of my partitions are recognised which i created using Truecrypt on Fedora 9.
So WHERE TO FROM HERE? Anyone tell me I don;t have to install Tiger on my laptop and forget about putting valuable data in any LUKS partition. I won't do it after my experience with fedora. I cant use MOUNTLOOP which (unstable whatever and kernel problem - IT WORKED WELL) - LUKS = LOSE Ure Key System and data again with another update - I can't use TRUECRYPT without building from source BECAUSE I AM A FOOL WHO COMPARES DOGS TO ASSES.. maybe i have to use Tiger OS? |
| | | Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Where it t Nov 27 2008 on group MANDRIVA LOVERS | fedora is on a strict time schedule regarding releases. that's the nature of that distro and as such, there are advantages and disadvantages. one is that it might not ship as ready as mandriva claims to be. on the other hand, i have found the last three mandriva releases fell far short of what was promised. i also like mandriva's look and the ease of use is the best. but it has so many holes. encryption is possible but you need time and skill. no ppc (why not?). and then my other gripe is that some of the software it ships is outdated like showFoto which i use all the time. Fedora 9 has a more recent version than 2008.1 does. all about appearance and promises and no follow through. i installed it for many friends when i was confident about it. but now many of them have stuck with MS. they are fed up with mountloop. nice going mandy. disappointed. |
| | | Re: Re: Re: Where it the threa Nov 27 2008 on group MANDRIVA LOVERS | do u mean you don't use the G3's anymore? the thing is, the ibook g4 works great still. mandriva is a nice distro.. but there are too many reasons for me to switch to fedora. the lack of reliable and easy encryption is a big big mess. |
| | | Re: Re: Re: 2009 is good but Nov 27 2008 on group MANDRIVA LOVERS | p.s. isn't realcrypt reliant on LUKS? because i installed and ran realcrypt on 2009 without having to go sudo. but to put all my mountloop data on real/true crypt folders will take about two months of dedicated activity. if i really wanted that, i would use truecrypt on fedora as i am doing now anyway with new data. realcrypt didn't have graphical tool until late in 2008 as i recall.
how about full root/home encryption at install like fedora 9 has? 2009.2? |
| | | Re: Where it the thread? Nov 27 2008 on group MANDRIVA LOVERS | ppc support exists on fedora and debian. i want to believe in something, so i believe that it will always be there for me and my lovely ibook. we feel so unloved by mandriva right now. once again.. does anyone know the french for "that sucks"? |
| | | Re: Re: 2009 is good but Nov 27 2008 on group MANDRIVA LOVERS | mm.. are you saying that using LUKS as normal user is not possible and that there is also no graphical tool for it? Or are you referring to mountloop? will mountloop support return in 2009.1? I have stacks of DVD's of data encrypted with mountloop and frankly speaking, i cant see why i should have to re-do them all just to use 2009. I'd rather keep 2008 and switch to fedora as a more reliable distribution, seeing as mandriva has left us all stranded this time. I have completely decrypted my root and home using luks on fedora and i didn';t need a degree in computer science to do it either. it was easier to that than it is on the mac. maybe my biggest mistake was trusting the mandriva distribution :-( sad. i know all about the insecure aspect and all that, but i don't care about that really. i made a choice then, to use mountloop. it worked for me and still does. now i am left without anything but an older version of mandriva to access data. excuse me but i don't know the french for "that sucks". |
| | | 2009 is good but Nov 26 2008 on group MANDRIVA LOVERS | mountloop doesn't work anymore. so i really can't switch to this great release. if anyone knows of a solution, let me know please. for now i am using fedora 9. anyway, there's no ppc release so my ibook G4 can only run fedora |
