Twitter? isn't it time to promote Free/libre projects, instead of conglomerates operated by the same shadow identites as almost everything else?

identi.ca is the open-source twitter released under the AGPL license - you can run your own server if you like. please, I'm not trying to flame, just pointing out that the poll should read "Best Identi.ca/Twitter Client" to promote the libre behind it. I thought that's a good thing to do.

Yes, identi.ca is a good alternative to Twitter, but after all it's just an OpenSource Twitter with a compatible API.

Yes, that's why we should promote it by giving it credit where appropriate :-)

by giving credit I mean at least to mention it, when appropriate.

Why?
I hope we all know why free/libre, independent, decentralized is better than controlled, secret, autocrative.

By decentralized, I mean there is a possibility to create new one, if the need arises.
By better, I mean better for the people, for everybody, for society.
Off course, for the private hands holding the power, it is bad thing.

Which one you choose to support? Now it supports the later one.

Amen brother. But let's refuse to speak for all the mainstream.

My favourite Twitter client actually *is* Identi.ca, since it forwards my posts to Twitter, and I get the replies through Jabber. My favourite Identi.ca client is also the Jabber network, with Psi being my favourite Jabber messenger. Screw Web apps, the Web is for documents, and screw pull-based update mechanisms (both RSS/ATOM and arbitrary APIs).

 Sick and tired.

This whole "social network" thing is a farce to begin with. A network of this kind is already social by nature, and sites like Facebook and Twitter are nothing but pointless distractions masquerading as freakishly mutated messenger services.

I have held accounts for both of these sites, and after several days of tireless searching and mounting rage, neither one totaled much more than an avalanche of absurd notification emails. Facebook tries to help you "connect and share with people in your life", but the features that serve that purpose don't compete with even basic email correspondence, and I have never seen a less appealing way to communicate than with Twitter's crippled, hopelessly chaotic global squawking match.

Bottom line, everything "social networks" can do, real websites can do better.

But I can see some advantages to site like the opendesktop.org family with the added features that can actually be useful to you computing experience with the bonus of increased communication and awareness of the good things happening in the open source community. Though I certainly have wasted a lot of time here.

I use Pidgin with Microblog-purple. The only limitation is that it doesn't show the Avatar images.

 The result!

As you can see, the vast majority chose option "Not using twitter". The option does not imply that the voter is not using Twitter, as there is no "I am" in it. So the result is clear:
The best Twitter solution is to not use it at all. Get some real friends instead!
