openDesktop.org improvements - we want your ideas!

Hey everybody,
in order to improve and to optimize the usability and user experience, we have decided to investigate in improvements and additions of new features and functions to openDesktop.org. Important for us are our users out there. Therefore, we decided to ask you as our community to bring your ideas or wishes in so that we can collect them and implement them. As you may know, openDesktop.org is a huge community network including kde-apps.org, kde-look.org, gtk-apps.org, gnome-look.org and many others similar sites. So proposed changes could applied for these sites, too.

Which features do you think could be improved? Where do you see potential for further usability optimizations? Are there any functions or features that you're missing? Or do you know annoying bugs which bother you? Propositions for usability improvements are also welcome! Now it's your chance for a change.
You can find a user group where we collect everything. It's also a place where we can discuss several propositions and concepts. So come on and get involved. We're looking forward for your ideas.

We need a bug tracker to report issues. Or if some already exists, there should be a good, visible link to it (e.g. in the footer of the page).
I found a nasty issue, but no way to report it. Or should I simply use the contact form??

I made good experience with adding a comment. A bug tracker on OpenDesktop.org does make no sense IMHO as opendesktop.org is a directory for software. Not a site for managing software. This is better done on sites like SourceForge.net.

It's up to the project, where Bugs shall be hosted and no one wants to have more than one bug tracking system.

Oh, I think I should rephrase:
I didn't mean a bug tracker for each application. What I was looking for was a bug tracker to report issues with the opendesktop site itself.

Could the password routine please be extended to the full ascii range? Even better would be the full ISO-8859-1 character range.

only letters and numbers is too weak.

I guess that would be a problem with the service they are using when hashing the password. The site is using linux I guess so a bash script is pretty possible.
Also the current set prevents SQL Injections.

Let's imagine a new voting system:

Joe votes good and his vote is added to the current vote of the item

Marry votes bad and is taken to a page where she should leave a comment why she voted bad (and possibly leave the comment anonymous but that might end up with stupid comments like 'Just like that' so her name should be always displayed). If he leaves no comment her username must be displayed on a list of bad voters so that if she does this regularly everybody will see it.

I think this restricts users that are voting positive. They should be able to leave constructive comments also.
An extra is that it prevents reloads which would make the websserver unhappy.

I don't see how are they limited in leaving a comment. The old 'Add a Comment' button will be preserved so everybody registered would be able to write his opinion.

As far as the server - the user is the King and he does not care about the server at all. He/she just wants to get it's job done.

There is a lot of old but good stuff that could need some minimal fixes. For example, making icon themes work with GHNS by using a standard directory structure or adding a .theme file.

It would be useful if trusted users have write access to the content, similar to source code repositories, i.e. with the ability to revert changes.

First of all I think it would be nice to have 5 star ratings instead of good bad... Most sites work with 5 star ratings and people are used to it.

More Subcategories would be nice
Plasmoids

..System monitors

Wallpaper

..Distro Art
..Etc

A front page with featured Items. Layed out differently to the normal listings.

- Maybe some icons next to the menu items or some visual cue of what the menus are for. There are quite a lot of menu items.

-News displayed more prominently on entry page. Better artwork more close to different projects(for instance KDE artwork doesn't look like current KDE art which makes the sites look less branded). In fact it would be nice to have custom themes and layouts for different projects.

- Less sidebar things... the site looks awfully crowded.

- Display "external link" next to items that link to other sites.

- Automatic link checking and notifying content creators that their links are down.

- Facebook connect logins
