Linus Torvalds announces he adopted Gnome

Linus Torvalds said in a recent interview that he switched from KDE to Gnome Desktop.



Now, the curious thing was the extraneous reasons he argued to do so: Basically because of KDE4! which he sees as a not so neat move.

Why he didn't stay with KDE 3.X ? The question remains. Though he seems to continue fighting the right click menu of Gnome, which was his main reason to say nothing worked OK with it earlier, inviting people to switch to KDE.

Meanwhile, perhaps, the people who furiously attacked Gnome "'cause Torvalds says so..." some time ago, will start to understand technology affairs create passion and flames but, in the end, all that remains is usability, taste and necessity. So keep your Desktop open but, most importantly, don't believe all what your Free Software heroes say. ;)

The problems of a major rewrite has not yet begun for Gnome, but with Gnome 3 they will face similar problems.

While KDE 4 is already on track for the future, Gnome 2 is stuck to minor innovations.

Just read the 'Gnome 3' article on Havoc Penningtons blog: http://log.ometer.com/2005-04.html. Note that this article was written in April 2005 and still no public life signs of Gnome 3.

What I also found very interesting was this excerpt from his blog:
Look at how much screaming we get for relatively tiny changes to today's desktop such as the file selector, focus stealing prevention, or whatever. Even with these small things, until the details are ironed out (adding typeahead to the file selector, adding flashing taskbar buttons to the focus stealing prevention) it's pretty disruptive.

Indeed. I've read the Blog some years ago and still wonder if there will ever be a Gnome 3.x. At least as a major improvement or jump over Gnome 2.x Now, if you ask me [...] No, please, don't ask me!

Perhaps KDE4.x Is in the right track, pushing changes and some improvements under the hood with the official adoption of QT4 (now GPL'd and Technicolor!) AFAIK some users gone from Gnome thinking that -beyond functionality- the eye candy, the new performance and the wave of fresh air worth the most.

Will ever be a Gnome 3?

To be fair, there are many promising things under the hood (quantum leaps..?).

To this very date Gnome project is rapidly opening its infamously closed doors. There are also some specific projects to think of, among them: Empathy project, Gstreamer (many people keen to work with...), the very Gimp's devel engine and some other little details here and there making a slow difference in the way things are to be done in the future.

In the big frame, ALSA is going to push many changes for all desktops too (ie. Local Desktop Sound Daemons) Now, I personally think, the actual GTK2 has many to offer seeing further.

Whatsoever, I think I am not the right person to talk about this because my technical skills aren't so good and I don't actually use a desktop.

I switched so much around this two guys that ended up creating a quite simple -but utterly efficient- way of handling my environment throughout rat-poison.

So, for me, the ultimate question is whether the WIMP model is worth to be seriously re-thought or broken in its current and standing form.

By the way, don't forget the promising E17. I really consider it as the real contender here if we manage to break the long standing tradition of binary thinking.

Will Linus be back?

I hope Linus is happy whatever his choice is for the good of all of us :D

yes its choice of freedom , he always had problem with Mr stallman just because Mr Stallman use gnome enviroment , I think Linus is down !!!

I think its great he moved to Gnome. Thanks for switching teams. The last time I personally used KDE was in my BSD days a few year back. It was too cluttered for my liking. I read that KDE 4.x has its issues, and to me Gnome has always felt like home to me. There is a reason why Ubuntu is the most popular distribution of Linux, and I think Gnome's simple layout and easy customisation have benefited it. Linux adoption will continue slowly upwards, but it will expand. With every generation of new users trying it out it will rise above Mac and Windows someday. Remember when computers were only toys for geeks? Now we all use them. Linux will be the OS of that masses in 20 years.

I'm a bit of a distro whore, and a tinkerer... Depending on mood and what computer I happen to be on I'll be in PC-BSD 7.0.2, PCLinuxOS 2009 or Ubuntu 8.04, so I routinely use KDE 4.1, KDE 3.5, and Gnome 2.whateveritsat. I have to say, I still like KDE 3.5 the best. I find it the most intuitive and customizable. That being said, the beauty of all this is of course the choice, and I like being able to get around in all of them. If Linus wants to use Gnome, that's his right, he can change his mind. I'm just happy he's contributed so much to giving us that choice...

I too, love to tinker and just like the "feel" of KDE.

Agreed-Freedom Of Choice is what it's all about-I'm glad that Linus has it, I'm glad that you have it, I'm glad that we all have it-Gnome, KDE, XFCE, IceWM, Fluxbox, whatever floats your boat is fine.

That being said, I'm a Gnome guy...
