Description:

This theme is aimed for people who just want a simple, fast and native interface with many color options. It's also designed with new linux users in mind, by providing simple, thorough instructions. A matching set of Icons, Wallpapers, GDM themes and Usplash screens can also be downloaded separately.

There are four color variations (Orange, Blue, Green, Red) and TWO designs; light and dark. You can create even more color-schemes through GNOME's appearance preferences, using the included tango palette for color suggestions!

This theme is designed for Ubuntu Hardy/Gnome 2.22. It will not work in earlier versions.

Important, must read or clowns will eat you:
- Inside the gtkrc files there are extensive line-by-line instructions and tips for customizing most aspects of the theme!

- GNOME-Colors are set as the default icons for the themes. Be sure to download them to get the full experience!

- This theme uses gradient panel backgrounds by default. If you plan to use Transparent/Custom panels, please disable my panels by editing either the gtkrc or panel.rc files like the included instructions tell you to.

- My X-Colors metacity borders are not selected by default, due to their non-conservative nature. You can choose them in gnome's appearance preferences if you wish to use them.

- Some linux apps are not too friendly to dark themes yet. It's up to their developers to improve this. Keep this in mind when using any dark theme.

- If you want root/super user applications to be themed, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root

- Feel free to try Murrine-Colors or Nodoka-Colors for alternate takes on this theme.

I experimented on an aurora version, but since it uses gradient and glossy widgets in such a strange combination, I would have to use too many pixmaps to get the native linux look I wanted.. and the aurora engine is already a bit slow before adding pixmaps into the equation. For now I'm just waiting for clearlooks to get even better or murrine to release a new stable version before doing anything major.

The metacity theme is not meant to look like the emerald theme.. but I did include alternative ones meant to look like that. You can choose them in the appearance preferences, window borders tab, their names are "X-Colors" and "X-Colors Dark". These should look like the emerald themes, and are only missing the colored stripe/gradient on top.

I've used the murrine version for few weeks and now i come back to clearlooks: i think this is the better version than ever. Which icon pack do you suggest to use with these themes? Thanks again for sharing and keeping up this excellent work.

while it's just my personal taste, I think these icons suit each theme nicely:

Human: Human, Discovery icons, or HumanElephant-Savane.
Brave: Oxygen Refit, Elementary icons, Crashbit or HumanElephant-Marine.
Wise: DeltaGreen icons.
Wine: There aren't many red icon themes, so I just use the neutral nuoveXT 2.

Again, these are just suggestions . this site is full of great icon themes, so feel free to browse around and find something to suit your needs.

Thanks for your advice, i'm trying Discovery Icon Pack, it looks very nice (even if i don't like the black ubuntu logo and the color of trash icon, but they aren't a big problem). Compliments for murrine-colors, also.

Hi,

I like this theme, especially with dark colors. Unfortunately, Eclipse is unuseable with it as all fields get black background and eclipse draws black text color.

Can you confirm this behavior? And is this the fault of Eclipse or is there something that can be done with the GTK theme?

I can't say with complete certainty, but I think it's an eclipse problem. GNOME as a whole is not very friendly to dark themes with dark base colors+light fonts. The best solution would be to change the colors of the theme in appearance preferences, making the input boxes background white and the text dark. That's what distros like ubuntustudio do to their dark themes, but it does not look too flattering.

Thanks for your reply. I already tried the white background color for applications, but as you say it looks not good - it just don't fit into the dark desktop theme. I'm using a trick for now, that is starting eclipse with another theme (a light one). This way I can work with eclipse and (almost) everything else is dark.

It's the same for xchat. It's using the dark colors everywhere but the chat window itself. This one stays white which then also looks ... not too good.

gVim fits perfectly with the evening color scheme :)

I hope this dark theming stuff improves with Ubuntu 8.10 when they ship a dark theme by default *g*

I think the problem lies with some apps not using standard GTK widgets/windows. While ideally everything would be consistent and standardized, it is often hard work for cross-platform software to fit in perfectly. It's something that might not go away even after a few linux release cycles. On the other hand, linux development is fast these days so you never know.

Well, dark themes seem to be popular these days too ... and if a "big" distribution like ubuntu decides to ship a dark(er) theme, maybe even as default theme, they sure will check if the most used / important apps will get along with that.

They decided against including a dark theme in 8.04 which was just released, maybe also because of the issues you've mentioned. I hope they are able to fix most of the showstoppers themselves. With my fix I'm able to use your theme most of the time which is fine, so thank you for that :)

The theme is fantastic and i'm using it since the beginning. Unfortunately i can't go past 1.4 because u altered the orange colour from the dark theme...
I don't have time to learn how to change it and that's a real problem- because...again... i really love it. Thx 4 you great work :)

the dark colors in 1.6 are brighter and better than 1.5. also, you can change any theme's color in gnome's appearance preferences :). use the included tango palette for a list of good color choices!

you can also alter any of the emerald themes so it fits whatever color you create.
