Description:

Red dot cursor is just that: a cursor theme with red dots :)

Now designed to work with the upcoming KDE 3.2!

The sources and some docs are included in the package so you can use it to create your own theme.

========================
Thanks to fredrikh who has provided the necessary information to complete this set for KDE.

Changelog:

15/10/2003:
* The upcoming KDE 3.2 includes a new easy install system for cursors.

The file was modified accordingly to follow this new standard. Just go to kcontrol->Peripherals->Mouse->Cursor Theme->Install New Theme... and select the file you just downloaded.

Just that simple!

14/03/2003:
* Changed install directory to ~/.icons/reddot. Now it's much cleaner

You can probably do this better using sodipodi. The tar.gz includes the original sodipodi svg files.

Edit them, change the color, and export to png format, at size 32x32. Then open it with Gimp, and add the shadow (something like (5,2) displacement and 2 of blurred width for example)

First of all, I want say that I am nobody to criticize this artwork because I could never do anything of the sorts (without many hours of discovery). So THANK YOU!

That being said, the cursor that shows up when a web-browser is loading a page, the read one with the little watch, seems very blurry. The rest of the icons are very "sharp" and look like steel with some red glow, but that particular arrow just looks weak. What if the loading arrow is just the default with a darker, sharper watch.

Sorry, correction, I guess I was refering to the redglass which is a default theme in X. Is there any reason why when (for instance) mozilla is loading a page it does not use the icon from the installed set and instead uses the fallback theme?

 no idea :-(

As far as this version of XFree doesn't get to be the standard I guess we'll be having problems of this sort:

-qt uses their own "improved" icons for a few things: dragging an object.
-mozilla uses the _system_'s default cursors in some cases, instead of following the "~/.icons/" setup.
-qt for example _assumes_ that some icons are identical (for ex. bottom_left_corner!=top_right_corner)

Kde guys had been trying to add some support to change the cursors on the fly, which I thought it was quite promissing, but they gave up.

I think the main problem is the lack of information that is provided from the XFree guys. It's surprising that they're unable to do a "XFree cursors FAQ" or a howto.

Good news is that in galeon2, most of the cursors work as they are supposed to (according to XFree). This means in galeon2 you get the hand, the crosshair and the resize images. The only icon which is being stubborn is the question_arrow. Not sure about this.

Hey, KDE guys are pretty damn cool about adding stuff. Just keep filing those bug reports and they will add it. Overall it looks like gnome2 is more up to speed on this though.

 The actual problem..

I don't think the actual problems come from KDE itself.
As you know, KDE is entirely based on QT libraries, same as Gnome uses gtk, gdk, etc.

The thing seems to be that GTK and other libraries respect XFree's standard cursors, whilst QT doesn't (originally to 'improve' the previous cursors) So... until QT fixes this issue probably there's little to be done. Sadly, the QT releases are not controlled by the KDE guys (at least not entirely)

To get the right watch in mozilla I had to link 08e8e1c95fe2fc01f976f1e063a24ccd to left_ptr_watch

 directory structure

Hi.

First of all - great work!
I was only a bit confused by your directory structure. Why don't you make it just like that:

~.icons/default/index.theme
~.icons/reddot/cursors/

and put in the index.theme:
Inherits=reddot

Now you can change the theme by just editing the inex.theme. I think 'reddot' describes this theme more or less very clearly ;) and my directory structure is orientated to the one of /usr/share/icons, so that I can change the theme by just editing my index.theme.

Bye.
Thorsten

 won't work

The problem I find with that is the following:

default inherits red_dot (fine)

but red_dot is not complete yet, so it needs to inherit whiteglass.

I tried to include another index.theme inheriting "whiteglass" but multiple-inheritance doesn't seem to work as does in kde icons (or c++ ;-) ). At least it didn't work for me in the ~/.icons directories.

There are windows cursors out there by a gentleman named Alex Maur that are some of the best cursor designs on the planet. Someone should see if he wants to have them ported.

I've browsed all of the CursorXP themes on wincustomize.com and can't find anything this good. We have a winner here, great job! I would like to see Everaldo do one for Crystal, but until then this is what I'll use.

I like the new version a lot better but as my kate windows background are in black, it would be easier to see it with a translucent white line between the black ones.
