Description:

Red dot cursor is just that: a cursor theme with red dots :)

Now designed to work with the upcoming KDE 3.2!

The sources and some docs are included in the package so you can use it to create your own theme.

========================
Thanks to fredrikh who has provided the necessary information to complete this set for KDE.

Changelog:

15/10/2003:
* The upcoming KDE 3.2 includes a new easy install system for cursors.

The file was modified accordingly to follow this new standard. Just go to kcontrol->Peripherals->Mouse->Cursor Theme->Install New Theme... and select the file you just downloaded.

Just that simple!

14/03/2003:
* Changed install directory to ~/.icons/reddot. Now it's much cleaner

Assuming you're using an XFree86 4.2.99.x snapshot... I don't know how to do this properly (or if there's even a proper way yet). ;)

For now, create a directory at "~/.icons/default/cursors/" and move/rename the cursor file to "~/.icons/default/cursors/left_ptr".

Also create the file "~/.icons/default/index.theme" and stick the next 2 lines in it:

[Icon Theme]
Inherits=redglass

(or whatever fallback theme you prefer)

Do NOT override the default cursor by moving your 'cursor theme' to .icons/default. This would cause an endless loop if the cursor theme inherits from 'default'.

A more elegant and recommended solution is to edit the Xresources.

Add to ~/.Xdefaults and/or ~/.Xresources the following,

Xcursor.theme: ThemeName

and then move the cursor-theme them e to the directory,

~/.icons/ThemeName
or
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons

The latter directory may be different according to your operating system.

If you wish to change the cursor before restarting, change the .Xresources/.Xdefaults file and run 'xrdb $file'. Only newly executed programs will see the changes so it is recommended to logout.

Xcursors can be translucent, animated, any arbitrary size, and each frame of animation can have a different delay before the next frame.

 Cursors and X

 by Markus on: Jan 28 2003

Cursors under X are black and white only. No transparency, no colors, not even grayscale.

It's a hardwired limitation [XBM file format IIRC]. So there is no way to make nice looking cursors for X at the moment!

Sorry, I just see there is a new cursor handling being developed. But this isn't available for current stable versions of X, isn't it?

 XFree 4.2.99

You need to use one of the release candidates for XFree 4.3.

You can either compile it (looooong), or install unstable packages (for example from Mandrake Cooker). They are tagged as 4.2.99 rc5 for the moment, but the stable will be out soon

 Curors, etc...

The new cursors are certainly a new improvement...for those looking just to 'tweak' the default ones, there is the source images in .xcf format (The Gimp), that has all of the shadows and transparencies there. I didn't mind the red ones, but have been slowly modifing them to my own liking. Looking forward to the actual 4.3 release.
