Re: Re: I just don't...
Nov 14 2010  on group I love KDE 3.5x

I'm mostly with you guys. KDE 3.5.x is all I really need.

I run mine dual-headed on Fedora 7 w/a later Centos 5 kernel and compiz-fusion. I like that spinning thing and emerald. I also run 3.5.10 on openSUSE 11.1 for my little laptop.

KDE4 is too cumbersome for me. The plasmoids are lots on symbolism and little on substance. Things that worked fine on KDE3 are now broken on KDE 4, and since I actually use my computers for something other than testing out new software and performing upgrqades, I need software that works.

I once tried building KDE4 from source, in an alternate location, but it's intertwined with GNOME to such an extent that the two are almost inseparable. If you need only one ot two programs, it's easier to use VMs.

I do use a lot of Qt4 apps. That's the beauty of Qt. It doesn't obsolete you. So, in addition to 3.3.8b, I'm running Qt4.6.3 without any problems whatsoever.

The only KDE4 app that I desire to run is a blogging client called blogilo, and I run that on VMware Server 1, with Fedora 12. If a version of blogilo is ever written for Qt alone, I'll go to it and use the space consumed by Fedora 12 and KDE 4 for something useful.

Personally, I would have rather seen KDE fork into two separate projects. One to maintain KDE3 and the other to go wherever KDE4 is going.

It would have been interesting to see which fork attracted more users.

Nevertheless, I just like things that work, and KDE 3.5.x works.
