You can have your cake and eat it too. Just install the KDE window manager and/or the plasma desktop(there are others!) in Ubuntu. Or if you don't have it installed already Kubuntu is the KDE spin. I am running KDE on top of Fedora now. In Linux the desktop isn't welded to the underlying system. Gnome is part of the GNU project and KDE/plasma is it's own thing. Unity is run by Canonical, however it is independent of Ubuntu from a user perspective. If you like Ubuntu and KDE, use 'em.

Jul 19 2014  on poll Do you like or dislike Ubuntu Unity?

KDE amazes me more and more each day. I tried Gnome and Unity, but KDE will allow me to do everything I never could do in Windows and more. The idea of Unity seems to be that I need to be protected from my own bad taste!
I don't need so-called un-nessecary options removed. Hidden, maybe. But features shouldn't be thrown away because they aren't trendy. Not every person needs to use every feature at every moment. I see cool things all the time that I file away for future tinkering. I like the Idea that I can have them and use them when I need them (and they won't have been disappeared). I like the idea that KDE is mature and stable enough to make it safe for me to tinker. I don't want them to throw it away and start over because they are bored.
In short, KDE is going in the direction I like, so why move to an immature and in my eyes more restrictive environment. In the case of people who need more hand-holding, why not invest more effort into gnome? Unity could have been a theme for chrisakes!
