this poll is obviously swayed to the kde side since this is a kde customization website--personally i think gnome better for everything except its lake of decent skins. blue curve is alright but plastik for kde is my favourite.

Hmmm.. Well, I must say, that at art.gnome.org, they do have many (also beautiful) skins, many windecos etc. for gnome, but what I really don't like is that you cant't adjust all those themes to your wishes as much as one would like to. Furthermore, nautilus is not nearly as good as konqueror (my opinion). The only thing that I really find better at gnome is their funny foot-logo. But who selects his/her desktop environment because of a logo (apart from those Microsoft and Macintosh messiahs)? *g*

I really think that the US computer firms, including Novell, are trying to kill off all non-american technology. Therefore KDE must remain and remain strong. If we allow the USA to take away the Open Source from the rest of the world, the future will not see one Microsoft, but many Microsofts, all sitting on the necks of the lower races...

I mean - look at the fact that we are /forced/ to write in English even here.

Your message is flamebait. Unfortunately it is dangerous flamebait because everyone who hits this page is going to think KDE hates americans which really makes no sense at all whatsoever.

There is only one race, the human race. It's not America that is trying to stop open source it is all proprietary software vendors all over the world, and they should be since open source is a threat to their business. As an american OSS enthusiast i am deeply offended by your comment. There are tons of american developers on the KDE team and even more americans who love and use open source software.

In fact if you want to go toe to toe with americans in the open source arena "Europa" would be left in the dust, yes Linux was created in Finland by Linus Torvalds, GNU and the GPL were created by Richard Stallman, this includes the GCC and assorted tools. Additionally the internet itself was created by DARPA an american organization.

The US gov't is supporting OSS, by supporting projects like SE Linux and the ReiserFS. I am not trying to take anything away from the world open source community since open source IS a worldwide effort i am simply asking that you don't pit America against the rest of the world (well at least as far as Open Source goes, nobody is too happy with american foreign policy but this is niether the time or the place for that discussion)

Bah... one more half-civilized nut criticizing america. Just don't listen to him. Every state has its good and its bad sides. There are as many "european" companies that try to secure their dominating position on the market as there are american companies. So who cares? Not me. I am interested in free and good software. And if there are good programmers in the US that contribute to KDE, the much better it is (and KDE can need every programmer, even if he is from Mars).
By the way, there are several very cooperative "american" linux-companies (like brazilian conectiva-linux or buffalo-linux)that don't want money for their distros (or support), while many european companies try to earn big money with linux (thinking of suse and mandrake e.g.).

We are "forced" to write in english. As far as I know, the english language has its origins in England and not in America. *g*

(okay okay, its origins are somehow obscure, dating back to the times of the Saxons and Normans, but hey, who cares after over 1000 years? ; ) )

Hey, we haven't had such flamewars in a while! Let's start one, right now, totally offtopic :)

I do care what its origins are even after 1000 years :), since I'd like to know who's responsible for this absolutely illogical, full of exceptions and ugly sounds language which I for some reason had to spend several precious years of my life learning :)

Btw, British people were using English before Americans(same :) IIRC, but why the heck is there a phrase "British accent"?! Like if American English is the original?!

I am not really trying to pit the US against the rest of the world, because the US takes care of that itself. What I want to do is to express my worries over the fact that the US draws everything of value towards itself.

Probably nobody in his right mind will deny that many good things come from the US. But the same right mind will also come to the conclusion that the equilibrium is absent, and that certainly is not a good thing.


Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Consider this flame bait if you will.

yup!!!! we all know that english came from the US and that the creator of this site, Frank Karlitschek, is American, and that Novell is switching to GNOME, right??

yes, that was sarcasm, in case you missed it. english comes from europe, the creator of this site is german, and Novell isn't switching wholescale to gnome.

another problem is that english speaking people forget about others.

So, for example, russians have to create their own patches (or even distributions) to add support for cyrillic charsets. And there are many cases when developers dont even want to apply the patch in official CVS tree (kopete, see at bugs.kde.org for "encoding").
