Why make a separation between konq
browser and filenamager?

konqueror is *one* application!

It surely wouldn't be as powerful if
it was 2 separate apps.

*konqueror* is the killer app.

Agreed, I regularly will do a split window to move data from my lcoal box to my webserver via konqs ftp capabilities and then I'll pop open another tab to make sure everything is uploaded correctly by viewing my site. Konqueror would not be nearly as cool if it couldn't do all that.

Until this is poll is corrected, I can not accurately vote.

Guys, it's in the nature of a poll that there is a limited amount of options. If you can't vote, then do not.

Ranting about the lack of options is no good. And you know, you can submit your own ideas for polls. Given that so many people have so much ideas, what could be done better, it's really weird, that no vote suggestions are sent to the KDE-Look team.

Or do we need a "disclaimer" below each poll as seen on /.?

That's true of course, but I still love konqueror as a filemanager and loathe it as a web browser. I rarely use it to surf, even in kde 3.2 it seems slow to render and does not feel right. I also have had it render sites incorrectly, while this is very rare, it still detracts from the experience of using it.

KPlayer should be on this list. It really does make a major difference as far as video and audio playing under KDE. See http://kplayer.sourceforge.net/

BTW: KPlayer is just a frontend for MPlayer, not a standalone application and I don't think that it can be considered as a KDE killer application.

I hear you, but one can also say that K3B is a frontend for cdrecord that provides good configuration and excellent KDE integration, plus some addons. Same for KPlayer, whether you personally like it or not.

Hey... I like kplayer. In fact it's the only media player I am using. But K3B is far more than just a frontend for one program. In fact K3B itself contains big parts of logic.

Don't let Sebastian hear this ;-)

But the problem with choosing a video front end, is that there are a lot of them out there. I personally prefer Kaffeine (a front end for Xine). Here is my review of Kaffeine: http://thelinuxbox.org/Kaffeine

i really cant understand why its still included in KDE standard distribution.

Its so buggy and it doesnt know what *usabilty* is.

SIM (sim-icq.sf.net) is my favorite client. It supports all IM protocols, non-default charsets, it can show me users ip and domain, it can determine wether user writes message at the moment or not.

Kopete is the only (AFAIK, anyways) maintained, full featured, multi-protocol, pure-KDE app with developers ready, willing and able to maintain their software in and with KDE CVS.

it's Good Enough(tm) for most users, as evidenced by the many happy Kopeters out there.

also, the only way to get software to maturity is to use it. if we waited until software was Perfect you wouldn't have even gotten KDE1 yet ;-)

if you aren't satisfied with Kopete in 3.2, wait for 3.3 ... =)

so why they have not forked SIM?
It *already* has anything user want, it may be compiled with KDE support.

It has good optimization and plugin structure. The only thing to do is to improve its integration w/ KDE

I (as well as all russians and ukrainians at least) won't be ever satisfied w/ Kopete cause its developers so lazy that they cant add support for changing encoding for icq (icq uses cp1251 de-facto).

Right click on the username, choose user name, then "User Info". In the dialog window which pops up then you can set "Encoding" to your wanted "Windows-1251 Cyrillic", then press "Save settings". Done.

I want to explain why I choose K3B. Many of KDE's applications are simply amazing. Having to choose just one is almost unfair since there are many that have equal merit in my opinion. However, prior to K3B, GUI burning programs in linux more or less sucked. If you knew what you were doing, you could more or less get stuff on a CD, but it wasn't exactly easy. K3B closes this gap in a major way. I applaud the K3B developer for seeing this void and filling it.

As for the rest of the KDE project, my votes cannot be tallied as they are far too numerous.

I aggry, K3B is a killer linux app. It equals Nero5 on Windows.
It has a lot of nice features, like burning VCD from mpeg-files, easy iso and bin/cue burning.

I chose K3b because I don't use any of the others...

I use krusader for file management and ftp, mozilla mail for email, opera for www and eclipse for development.
