however I'm stuck with Mozilla, since the Mozilla Mail client works best with a LDAP directory and since Mozilla is loaded anyway therefore I use the Mozilla browser.

I really hope that kmail or kontakt has a better LDAP integration.

...my wife complained that I do not pay attention...or something like that...

LDAP works quite well for me. Just configure it in the Control Center and it works as expected.

What is your exact problem?

Definitely Mozilla Firebird. To explain my choice:


  • Konqueror: Cool browser, with nifty tricks like multiple window splitting, smb protocol and so on. However: No extension mechanism, no mouse gestures, and no tabbed browsing beyond the blindingly obvious.

  • Mozilla: Bloatzilla. Still works rather well though, but its a bit hard to find themes since deskmod.org departed this vale of tears.

  • Galeon: Lots of people seem to like this, so it's probably rather good. Don't know much about it. Suspect its a lot like Mozilla with better GTK and Gnome integration and maybe better speed.

  • MSIE: Hahahahahaha!

  • Opera: There is nothing more important than screen real estate. Who wants to look at one more stupid advertising banner??

  • Lynx: Well, it is useful...when your X-Server has died. After that, it cannot compete,simply for its totally abysmal rendering abilities.

  • Safari: I almost chose this one. I absolutely love Safari. From the cool, minimalistic interface to the speed that resembles a chihuahua on crack, this would be my all-time favourite if only it ran on my desktop (Athlon), instead of just my iBook 500. Alas, no such luck. And it is admittedly true that Safari lacks several nice features, in the typical Apple minimalism.

  • Firebird: My champion. Almost as fast as Safari, it offers a compact UI - I moved the buttons and the location bar into the Menu Bar and disabled Bookmarks and Navigation Bars. A good bookmark management, especially the "Bookmark all tabs in Folder" feature; this allows a fast backup of my 15-tabs session. Then the extensions, of which there are a great many, with the most prominent being MouseGestures and the huge, over-featured Tabbrowser Extension. This one allows nifty things like reopening tabs you accidentally closed, dealing with which tab to shift to after you close your current tab, when to request confirmation, how to label the tab, and so on and so forth. As a last case in point, the 100+ good themes for Firebird. It seems that most Mozilla theme developers moved to Firebird.

Before KDE 3.2: Definatly Firebird

With KDE 3.2: Konqueror

Konqi has VASTLY improved in the betas.. It has mouse gestures through khotkeys2, it has a new tabbar that's almost exactly like firebirds, and speed has shot through the roof.

I can also use a lot more pages with Konq these days. That's always good. I still keep firebird around for the one or two pages that don't work still, just like many mac users keep IE around for those one or two pages. But it's nearly there!

I think a lot of KDE users will switch to Konq once 3.2 is released.

I surely do...or did...during those bad(and long gone ;) times when I was stuck with winbloze Opera was a very, very nice choice, despite the banner. The Linux version only recently began to shape into something decent, though(but it was still nice and fast, though somewhat(ok, _quite_) buggy). And I think it's the first browser I used that had the tabs(I switched to Mozilla, then Konqueror as they got tabbed browsing support(I still miss the ability to save them the way you do in Opera, though)). Btw, I can't say the banner eats that much of space - it's on the toolbar, anyways - unless you tend to fill it with much more icons, you're not really losing anything...

Konq has "Bookmark tabs as Folder" options now.

It also has profiles. I love these.
I have two main ones. 'News' and 'Banking' ... when you open a profile it loads all the tabs and settings you had when you made the profile. This is a great feature as I can open up all my bank and credit card login screens all at once, then when I'm done, I switch to 'News' which loads slashdot, linuxtoday, kde.org, and the cia bot statistics for instance.

Yeah, mouse gestures too and by the sound of it you're running a 3.1.x so tabs have also become really nice in CVS.

Well, I haven't really thought about profiles as an option to save tabs, but I guess that works too...What I really wanted is something like a pop-up asking if I want to save the tabs on exit and restore them the next time I start the browser.

Mmmm. Mouse gestures :) (Only 3.1.4/SuSE 9.0 here :(

Will we have to wait until next year to have KDE 3.2? Would be really nice to have TWO presents for New Year - 2.6 kernel _and_ KDE 3.2 ;)

The Trouble with Profiles has been bought up many a time here. It seems that, even though programmers and many others see this as a huge usability plus, the problem is, it's hidden away in an obscure menu that no normal user ever sees. I am of course not saying "put it in the toolbar", which is already over-crowded (see the toolbar review going on at kde.tikiwiki.org ), what, however, I am saying is either rename it, or make it easier for the user to find and use. Currently, it looks disturbing, and most users won't even understand it. I did actually run it past my parents (and my little brother who is a scary copy of myself, just nine years younger (he's 14)), and none of them were able to figure out their way through the, though very simple, not exactly self-explanatory Profile editing dialog. And no, unfortunately I have not a clue how to do it better, though I would suspect something like Configure Profiles would be good...

Yup, the release manager is going on vacation for two weeks during the holidays. Free software hackers need vacation too, you know :-) !

Configure Konqueror>Java&Java Script>Java Script

You'll see Global JavaScript Policies, In the Open new windows: select Smart. This blocks all pop-ups, and it's been in Konqi ever since I can remember.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think this was around way before anyone else had pop-up blockers.

Yup, Konqueror was one of the first browsers to DIRECTLY integrate popup blocking in the browser. That's why it was declared one of the best porn viewing browsers back in kde 2.0 or 2.1 :)

However, Mozilla and it's large team of 50+ developers (before AOL killed off the last remeneants of their Netscape division) eventually overtook Konqueror and khtml with it's 5 developers.

It's completely changed in the last six months however. Now that Apple has been working on khtml, it has vastly improved. Not everything has been integrated into KDE 3.2 (because of freezes, etc..), but eventually will. David Hyatt (who coincidently founded the MozFirebird/Phoenix project before he was hired by Apple), recently put up a list of stuff Apple's worked on in khtml at http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/hyatt/archives/2003_12.html#004377

Check it out.. :)

With those changes, khtml will support more CSS3 than Mozilla (still less CSS2, but that's improving as well)

Mouse gestures are are a global function in KDE3.2, I use em in konq all the time.

My preference:
Konq 3.2 > Firebird > Konq 3.1

Has someone managed to run Thunderbird and Firebird in parallel? If I have Thunderbird running and want to open a new window through MozillaFirebird -remote "openURL(\"$1\",new-tab)" I get an error message. As soon as I close Thunderbird it works again.

...my wife complained that I do not pay attention...or something like that...

Konqueror is my current browser, although I recently installed Firebird 0.7 and it almost won me over. The lighter firebird makes its speed comparable to Konqy on my system (while mozilla wasn't) and its interface is cleaner and better. But I still like konqy more... mainly for profiles and its file management. It's great for web development, I have profiles for various sites with a local copy, the remote site, html/css spec docs, and "ftp" tabs. The ftp tab is actually a split-screen of the ftp server and my local filesystem, allowing me to move files back and forth -- which just shows konqy's incredible flexibility. The fact that I can change from working on one site to another within the same window just by opening a different profile is wonderful!
