In my opinion KDE is "over-iconished".

There are Icons everywhere, sqeezed together to have a maximum amount of icons on a small space, especially in konqueror. When I open a KDE app, i usually get a toolbar with tons of icons, which i cannot clearly tell what they're for, for some reasons:

1.) Mostly people take standard crystal-icons, to have a integrated shiny look - but that way the original meaning of the icon gets ambiguous, which doesn't increase the recognition effect in other applications or the DE itself. Then they mix it up with self made icons for features they didn't find a crystal equivalent for, and this really looks ugly.

2.) The standard setting for toolbars is medium size icons without symbol-text. There are several other icons in konqueror, think of the side-bar icons, with the same size. This and for the reason mentioned before, the usability of the toolbars is mess.

They should be redesigned, especially in konqueror reduced. Some icons should just go somewhere else, where they are in a better context. The tab icon for example:

I don't expect it in the toolbar, it should be in the actual tab-area.

If you reduce the amount of icons used within applications, the more the icons will point out where they are used.

Finally I think there should be better guidlines for application-developers - like there are in Gnome, HIG. Gnome applications usually look a lot more cleaner and defined, which doesn't mean that KDE is my desktop of choice :-)

KDE has a HIG, it just doesn't call it HIG, but KDE User Interface Guidelines.

I know it's not complete yet, but it exists.

And for the toolbar problem: for usability reasons, it's better to have less icons but with larger "clicking area" and including text (because of Fitt's Law). I'll try to use this argument to convince people, but that's something that can't be done before KDE 3.3

Indeed, I agree wholeheartedly. The first thing I do on any new KDE desktop is change the icon size in konqueror to "large" (32x32). There's a reason every other browser on the planet uses good-sized icons :).

The other thing is, many of the icons are unecesary. I'm sure cut/copy/paste are unused (thats what the edit menu is for, and possibly the right-click menu.... many people just use ctrl-c/ctrl-v). The printing icon is good, but frankly I think "print frame" is a little to specialized (frame sites are not in wide use anyway). Some of the others are unecessary as well, but the point is the true usefulness of having so many of these icons on by default should be seriously looked at.

But beyond that, konqueror is the best browser on the planet!

Fewer icons, please. The icon-bar is supposed to be a shortcut mechanism for commonly used actions, not a replacement for the application menu. Heck, the toolbars are so close to the app menu that it doesn't save much mousing anyway. I think the GNOME folks have the right idea with respect to icons. GNOME apps typically have a very well-chosen set of toolbar icons.

Of course, being customizable makes things more bearable. Is there a way to save toolbar setups? Maybe we could share custom toolbar layouts on kdelook.org.

And as a shortcut bar it should be just that: An easy alternative to the menu. It is simply not easy if you can't figure out instantly which icon to click on, and if there's too many it makes it very much more difficult :)

You can save toolbar setups by saving the view profile. If you save it as one of the standard ones (File Management, Web Browsing, etc) than it will load the tool bar icons like you set.

You can also share your icon setups by sharing the profile files which can be found in ~/.kde/share/konqueror/profiles.

I have a pretty nice minimalistic icon setup that I love. Maybe if I get some requests here I will post it on kde-look.org.
