This operating system everyone calls "Linux" is actually the GNU system, which was started by Richard Stallman in 1984. By 1990, the GNU developers had completed everything but the kernel. Linus Torvalds thought it would be fun to create an OS, so he started work on his kernel (Linux) and got it working before GNU got theirs working. Then he combined the GNU system with his kernel and started calling it Linux. His contribution was important, but he is given credit for things he didn't do, and refuses to at the very least call it GNU/Linux.
Richard Stallman is the real hero, as he started the Free Software Foundation and the GNU Project, and to this day is still a high-profile software-freedom activist.

Great point not that anyone listens. Honestly there is a lot more as well. There would never had been any *nixes or BSD or any other derivative Unix OS or kernel if it has not been for Ken Thomson, Dennis Richie and many others.


I have a shirt that has Linus dressed up like Superman flying. Before I had that picture put on that shirt I hacked it to set the record straight according to the earliest *nix days.

"Historically speaking Ken Thomson and Dennis Richie are the real heroes here but some one did write a rather popular Unix clone so that makes him pretty cool as well."

No the operating system everyone calls Linux is Linux. Linux is the operating system here. GNU never actually got around to producing an operating system. There is herd, but it never got the point of being useful to anyone but the developers. All the GNU software programs make the system more useful, but without Linux nobody would probably use the GNU tools that much and without GNU software, Linux probably wouldn't be used very much so to say one is more important than the other is ridiculous. Get your facts straight before you go saying things about someone, especially someone like Linus.

The only thing GNU needed to be a complete OS was a kernel. Linus Torvalds finished his kernel first and combined it with GNU.
I'm not saying Linus isn't important to the free software community, but everyone gives him credit for the whole OS, when all he really did was write the kernel. I'll admit, if it weren't for him, GNU probably wouldn't have seen daylight for several more years, but let's not forget that RMS started it all. What would he have done if there was no GNU to add his kernel to? Or if there was no GNU GPL for him to license it under.

well when you talk about people not giving credit to gnu you are mostly talking about people who dont understand linux much in the first place. ask linus, any developer or an intermediate linux user and they will say they know about gnu's role in the os. linus was an important guy and deserves a lot of credit. what he deserves credit for is linux. that is what he made: linux (which is a kernel). if someone said he started linux they would be totally right, if they said he started gnu/linux they would be wrong. i have never ever heard someone say that he started gnu/linux so i have never heard someone give him credit he didn't deserve. i have a lot of thanks to both of them for all thieir work but it isnt linus's fault people dont say gnu/linux when describing the os. although he started it all he is not the boss.
