I'd really like to learn Mono and it would be all the better if there were bindings for Qt/KDE. I wish the KDE camp would quit rejecting the cool stuff coming out of the GNOME world (Xgl/AIGLX/Compiz, Mono, etc.) and join the party.

I second that, I too would like to be able to write in Qt#, and I'd like it to be as popular, advanced and easy to use as Gtk# (I saw some example Qt C# bindings recently, but they required to write strange annotations before each method...). Mono/C# seems to be a quite nice platform and I would like to write some apps using it, but now for GUI apps you have the choice to use either Windows.Forms, which looks bad at the moment, or Gtk, which looks bad always...

javascript does not get more respect. Its like the most and I mean the most, widely distributed and understood scripting language in the world, by virtue of its ties to all modern browsers and the internet.

Almost anyone can write javascript, which means its vey very accessible, approachable, you do not even need a fancy smancy IDE or editor.

With its OO orientation most people are able to grow up into more powerful languages, so its a very good entry level for people curious about developing for Linux. and I could go on and on...

You forget that javascript syntax is ugly. The libraries are outdated and the different interpeters interpet the scripts differently.

It's also poluted with proprietary libraries, for instance IE doesn't use the same syntax for XML fetching like any other browser (used in (ugh) AJAX). Working around things like this makes the language suck.

Respectfully, syntactic beauty is relative... compared to VB? to Java? IMHO the trickiest syntax issues are use of prototype classes/functions, data (non) hiding and typing. But thats not unique to javascript.

'Polluted with proprietary code' is misleading; javascript is for many years now an international standard hence its proper name ECMAScript.

I agree javascript is interpreted differently by different browsers or in other words Microsoft and their Internet Explorer tried to hijack javascript with their proprietary extensions. That was wrong but not a reflection on Javascript, on the contrary it shows how important javascript has become. Besides MS has thrown in the towel on this one, promising now to adhere to ECMAscript standards.

But the most important point -- and its very new, you may have missed it; the consortium guiding Ecmascript are proposing new, more powerful features like data typing, multiple inheritance, new data structures etc. bringing it to par with most modern scripting language capabilities but keeping it still easy and simple for the majority of its users.

Let the user choose ! If the user prefers Ruby to make quick'n'dirty scripts, let him use ruby, and if he prefers OCAML (lol) let him use OCAML !

This is the KDE way of doing things. Users do what they want, and KDE let them do what they want to do.

Umm I'm not really sure how you can consider C# or Java to be scripting languages. Sure, you could call them interpreted languages to a degree but scripting? These are compiled languages, rather different from the others listed.

Both are languages that are easy to learn, but yes... you're right in saying that these are not really scripting languages, but if the people want to use them like scripting languages it can be done.

There isn't 1000 votes yet but there's already a kind of tendancy: The Python will eat you all! ;-)

As a Python fan, I couldn't resist to pleasure to say that the best language has already won. Any way, I don't think it's a good idea to force ANY language on the user but we can at least forget the ones which haven't reached 10% and let the user have a choice amongst the most used. The KDE developers have already enough work, they shouldn't lose their time on "rare" languages. And if "third-parties" want to take care of the forgotten languages, why not? We're living in an Open World, ain't we?
