Can someone explain to me what's the aim of having kicker narrower than the screen?

The gaps right and left are just lost room scattering the visual appearance of my desktop??? (Except if you do allow windows to cover the panel what I don't...)

This is what I feel however this poll reflects there is something I don't get :)

I keep the kicker at the top and small and narrow. This way I can use the B2 window theme and use the extra space at the top. Of course for it to be narrow I have to get rid of the task bar, but I use the Kasbar instead which IMHO is better.

A snapshot of my desktop is at

I use two panels at the bottom. It would be nice if the two panels I use could be combined into one panel (a two row panel). Then it wouldn't be necessary to leave the gaps at the top and bottom of the columns of desktop icons or lock icons in place to stop their being moved when logging off and back on.
