Inevitably, I have trouble getting my wireless Internet working. Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS are the only distros I can get it to work correctly on with little to no trouble.

I also have problems with sound lagging video, as someone mentioned above, though it only gets bad quickly with Flash.

all hardware sucks, all software sucks.

First of all, the most troublesome part in my notebook is the CPU. Yes, that's right - CPU. It's 1600 Mhz AMD sempron, which constantly works at 800 Mhz (even in the BIOS boot screen it's 800 MHz).

Next, power management. It takes too much effort to make it work as expected.

It is not the size of the hammer that counts. It's how you wield it.

I know the fix to this!!! Why? I have the same CPU and the same problem. Turn of the powernowd daemon!!! I'm on Kubuntu so the command is first

/etc/init.d/powerdnowd stop

then

sudo update-rc.d -f powernowd remove

on RH SuSE or Mandriva do

sudo chkconfig powernowd off

for the second command ... the first one will kill the $#@#$ daemon and the second one will make sure it doesn't turn on again after reboot.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunantely, I don't run any power-saving daemons, and cpu scaling is off too.

I once saw a forum post about the same problem with the same laptop model - the guy was using winslows. The forum was in german, so I only understood that he used some utility for windows and succeeded.

It is not the size of the hammer that counts. It's how you wield it.

Hi,
I had the same problem with AMD64 laptop. The CPU was going on 800 MHz only. I installed (yes, installed, not uninstalled) powernowd and configured it (you can choose the 'style' of powernowd behaviour in the config file), and.. It worked! Now laptop works on 800 Mhz when it doesn't do anything special, and turns to 1500 MHz when it compiles something. Just great :)

Thanks for your advice. At first, powernowd threw an error, then I looked at my kernel config and saw that I've enabled the wrong CPU support under "CPU scaling" (Stupid AMD calls both k7 and k8 based CPUs "semprons". Mine is k8-based, but I'd enabled the k7 support. Doh). I've recompiled the kernel, and powernowd works just fine. Thanks!

I'm running Kubuntu Breezy 5.10, and I have had no trouble with hardware. Everything works out of the box!

Here's the challenge that Kubuntu passed (out-of-the-box):
Athlon processor
Via chipset
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (albeit, 3D required an apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx)
Audigy 2 Platinum
Linksys WUSB11 Wireless USB Adapter
HP PhotoJet 7350
Yamaha UX16 USB-Midi Interface
Gravis USB GamePad
Kodak DX7630 Digital Camera
iPod


Now, I haven't tried:
Belkin VideoBus II
Hauppage WinTV USB

but, we'll see!

I have problems with my TV-card only. My SuSE knows the philips-chipset but it doesn't work anyway. But - fortunately - I don't need my card any longer =)

I' going to install Slackware later on - maybe slack knows how to use this card...

Printer CanonS400 @ CUPS prints 3x (maybe more x) slower than @ Windows :( But this isn't KDE problem... ) Have you any ideas howTo print fast ? Btw: I'm using driver Canon BJC 6000, because with CanonS400 driver prints more slower and uglier (colors).
