'normal' size is 32, large is 48.
If your desktop size is smaller than 1024 pixel it is default off.

only Desktop icons are set according to the desktop size.

The panel icons are set according to the panel size. Actually you have no choice about the icon size, you just can choose the panel size. It is a bit misleading. The poll should be:

Do you want the panel to be
[ ] large size by default
[ ] normal size by default

Should I ask to remove this poll?

BTW: Is large default?

Ah, I think you have refered to a bug in kpersonaliser - if you select the large panel icon option, the panel should be set to size large (not normal).

I consider the size "normal" of kicker too big for 1024x768, it takes too much space; I think this is in reference to macos-x's panel, but it's horrible and looks awefull...

mac os X uses 128x128 icons when fully zoomed (ie they are stored as 128x128, and scalled down according to user prefs), a 128x128 icon is 16 times larger than a 32x32 icon (what the "normal" panel is). the reason it is "normal" is probably more because desktop icons in windows are 32x32. personally, i use a "small" panel on a 1280x1024 desktop, and would probably use "tiny" if i had a 1024x768, but its pretty easy to change the panel size, and thus the icon size.

correct me if i am wrong, but isnt the panel size determined when you first start kde by the speed/eyecandy slider that pops up?

i havent installed a new version of kde enough to actually have played around with what that slider does, i usually just leave it and then set the settings individually.

In earlier versions the features on the slider where only arranged according to the performance. e.g. panel icon zooming needs few cpu cycles and was set to position 3. Anti aliasing fonts need lot of cpu cycles and was set to position 7. The slider was set to position 4. I expect most user just press the next button, which leads to the result: Anti aliased fonts default off, panel icon zooming default on :-(.
The new keyecandy page is more dynamic. It will detect cpu speed and XRENDER support and also takes user preferences into account (according to the results of these polls) e.g. If you select mac-style on page 2, panel icon zooming is put on position 3 (default on). If you have selected windows/kde/unix it is set to position 8 (default off).

If you have a modern Pc the slider is set at position 7. I consider features that are placed at position 1-7 default on, 8-9 default off
