Every day my KDE feels more slower than the day before.
Apps start slow and redraw slow... Even WINE apps start faster than native KDE ones.
Sorry, but I'm starting to lose the hope on open source software.

Is diskspace an issue for Linux?

I used to think that filesystems like ReiserFS kept a bunch of free space for its internal use (to speed up disk operations), and thus they don't need any extra free space. Is this true?

To say the truth, I'm in a very contrained computer, no more than 250Mb free (and usually only 150Mb or lower).

Does anyone have a benchmark measuring free diskspace and KDE app startup performance? It would be worth to look into.

Thanks for your help, pal ;) Now I have one more thing to consider.

If you have less than 90% free disk the performance of your box will suffer, since data on the hard disk will get fragmented more and more as there are fewer and fewer free contiguos inodes and no more space left to get rid of fragmented inodes and performing optimizations.

I think this is not enough .....

Try to get more free space.

Another thing iss that you try to delete in you´re Homedirectory .kde

but noticy all you have done in KDE is gone away for example you´re E-Mail account setting in kmail or the settings in kopete and so on ...

SuSE 9.1 without transparency activated.
I already erased some files and now the disk usage is at 87%.
KDE feels slow, as always.

As an example: KCalc takes 10 seconds to load the first time. 2 seconds the next time.
TVtime loads almost instantly (lower than a second).

create a new user, close all kde sessions you're running and start a new session as the new user you've just created. This should speed up things.

somehow, something got messed up along the way for you, cause kcalc should not take anywhere near that long to load, even if it was on an ancient computer.

try doing like he said and make a new account. if that doesnt work, try another distro.

Have Celeron400/256Mb RAM/slow swap/i740/FreeBSD-5.4 but Xorg6.8.2+Qt.3.3.4+KDE3.4 compiled from ports w/ -march=pentium2 -O3 @gcc3.4.2 (as the whole system is). Even w/ transparency effects & Crystal-GL windeco it runs smoothly. While Fedora users @faster machines complain much about KDE performance. Distributors should use more aggressive optimisations & provide system-oriented binaries (e.g. separate for P2, P3, P4, etc.) IMHO

I have a 800MHZ Duron 1 gig ram
120Gig western digital 72000 rpm Hard drive & Ati Rage 128 Pro 16 meg Video card.
I run a custom linux distro something i put together myself everything i686 -02
and it is faster than windows.

Those 4 peices of hardware really play a roll on system performance.

Some other things are just the way your system is built.

When you said you are loseing all hope for open source software well (chuckel)
most of the best programs ever built are open source.

Depends of what area of KDE I was comparing, but in a average way, KDE is a bit faster now.
Well, I think it has to speed up even more, but I only use other desktop where the hardware can't run KDE in a aceptable way.

KDE itself seems lil better, and also the integrity of the package as a whole.

Every day my KDE feels more slower than the day before. Apps start slow and redraw slow... Even WINE apps start faster than native KDE ones. Sorry, but I'm starting to lose the hope on open source software.
