True, the icons should be smooth zooming, but I'm not sure what work would have to be done...the current implemetation swaps the icon for a larger file. Apple's implementation is that all icons are stored huge and scaled for everything, so this icon scaling thing is natural (indeed, the dock proves that thier code is FAST enough to display a directory in the Finder and scalee all the 128x128 icons down to user desired size on the fly.)

So, I think the KDE way of handling icons is completly different from Apples, and pulling off that particular trick may require a hell of a code rewrite throughout much of konqueror/kdesktop/kicker.

I agree with both of these points. The zoom was really cool when i played with an apple in the computer shop, the popup just looks ugly and is annoying.
But, it would take a rewrite of major parts of kde. For such a minor change as this, it's not worth it.

Pleeeaase no smooth zoom!!! I LOOVE the way it is right now on KDE, it barely uses any resources to do the zoom effect. Try going back and forth over the panel on dual g4 and cpu is going to 100%

You're also playing games right?
Well, guess what.. they're also making the cpu going to 100$ !!

The current way is no zooming, it's just a popup.

And if they make it an option, people like you can switch it off, just like the dropshadows and other nice and dandy stuff.

If you want your cpu to use 1.1% all the time, go ahead! Turn every nice thingie off!
But don't make use all buy 2 Ghz computers to let it run at 1.1% !

I really like the icon zooming, BUT even though I voted "on," I do think that smooth zooming should be looked into. When KDE 3.1 implements SVG icons, it should be pretty easy to do smooth zooming, no?

Some of these SVG icons look great, but are very complicated. How quickly can they be processed? Does anybody know? From experience I know resizing vectors can take a lot of CPU time, it may be that only the most powerful computers are able to do SVG icon zooming

I believe apples way of icon zooming is because they do use vector images (as opposed to raster, like the png icons kde has right now). If i'm not mistaken, apples format is pdf. Anyways, I'm really looking forward to kde 3.1 as i'm hoping the SVG icons bring that type of effect to KDE soon after.

No they don't! They use vector graphics for their icons. Sure that verry handy as you don't need to create icons in 4 different sizes. But the whole process needed to show them on your screen eats tons of memory and alot of cpu sycles

He, you are wrong. Why do you post such crap if you obviously never even dared to try to investigate?

Just try to do some _little_ research (like reading articles on www.iconfactory.com or Ars Technica) And you'll find out that Mac OS X DOES NOT use vector-icons but simple bitmaps instead.
As an alternative you can even _SEE_ it yourself: just use the slider that changes the size of the icons on the fly: You'll notice that for certain sizes (16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, 128x128) the icons get _MUCH_ sharper than for the other (scaled) ones.

Well...personally i like the zooming as it is..i'd also like a smooth macOsX zoom alike though..so choice would be good.
but..before all that eye-candy stuff, I'd like a rock-solid kde..that doesn't wants to fall apart every moment ;)

Yes, me too. I really like the saturation effect (is that the correct term?) that comes when turning off the icon zooming. That would make a nice default, which was the case before, IIRC. Then someone saw the icon zooming in OSX and thought "hey! let's try this, and in the same time the users get to see Tackat's nice large sized icons!". Don't get me wrong, Tackat's large sized icons are great. But they should be seen in their right envorinment, IMHO, and not in the context of a so-so attempt at imitating the OSX icon zoom. And it seems like the majority here agrees with me.

i think its more important to be able to set how much the icon zooms (ie, what size icon to be displayed when it has been zoomed). It may just be my imagination, but in kde 3, the "small" toolbar zooms to a smaller icon size than it did in the 2.2 series.

PS if it is already possible to set this, please tell me how.
