I got a lot of friends on Jabber. I really like it, especially for it's native unicode support, while ICQ often give me headache with missinterpreting encodings :/

also most friends use windows with icq then, that's again other charsets

Jabber has support for Avatars unofficially and some clients use it like Pandion (http://www.pandion.be/), it's for Windows but it supports it anyway.

Unfortunly as you said, very few people use it, I've once tryed to make my friends use it but I had no luck :(

More things depend on the client you're using. But PSI, being my client of choice, is quite good. It implements the direct file transfer features of the protocol and unlike many of the compatitors it even works through a firewall and over nat.
There are quite good interfaces to ICQ and most of the other big networks, so one can just keep on talking with the old chums and since psi is multiplatform I can use the same tool under windows and linux..

Are you sure? I though jabber didn't support direct file transfer. Only non-direct file transfer and only if the servers used by both clients had file transfer proxy. Then again, I might be wrong...

I like ICQ. I used it for years. But like 4 years ago everybody everybody used MSN Messenger, nobody used ICQ anymore. I stayed with ICQ for a while, and finally stepped over to MSN. I mean, I use the protocol, not the program ;)

I have 3 problems with ICQ:
1. My ISP is strange. WHen I try to go online with ICQ, it sometimes does, and sometimes doesn't
2. Kopete has a bug with non-latin1 encodings. Everything I recieve is converted to Latin1 and thus rendered unreadable
3. ICQ is full of advertising bots.

I prefer Jabber
