I am curious, what other "modern" GUI are being implied here? Sure there are others join and exit from time to time, but presently is there others?

I still vote for KDE!
Why if it dosen't have good-looking-fonts and transparency?

Well, the question is if KDE is good, and for me those things are minimal, what really make kde feels good are options as "ignore all" when you are copying a bunch of files on konqueror.
On windows, if you want already existing files not to be overwriten, then you have to press no at each existing file.

KDE is modern on the way it works for the user, and that is a desktop for me. Eye-Candy is needed too, but only IF you have a good user experience.

I take OSX as a example, I simply don't like the way it works... no not even with all that eye-candy on it, it makes ma like it.

What r u tryin to compare exactly?
KDE3 with MacOs and WinXP?
Well its fairly easy guys, In MacOs, WinXP u get what they give to you. in KDE u just get what u want. If i want to my desktop to look just like MacOs(which i dont like because of these stupid huge icons) i just make it so. If want it to look like Xp i just make it so. Maybe it isnt always easy to do it because of other difficulties that u may encounter but still thats another issue. If u dont know how to make fonts look right then blame your self because u havent searched or tried enough, dont blame KDE. Well maybe u dont want to interfere with linux deeply enough to make your system do or look like according to your likings. Well blame yourself for that to and stick with your windoze- they dont suck that much after all!
But the point is that no matter what(in terms of looks) my friends(or anyone that has seen my desktop) will still askin me for ways to make their desktop look like mine, period!
Well i can only give them my wallpaper LOL. Keep whinin about "real" transparency and things like that and buy yourself a power PC that runs MacOSX, or better buy yourself a copy of Winxp. Get real

While everyone points are good. I still like KDE better than the others. Specifically, I like Konqueror because it doesn't get file types by extension alone. If you look, it seems to parse the file (or perhaps just the header) to see what type of file it is. This is similiar to the "file" command. Second on my list is MacOSX because I know that Apple has done some research on what makes an affective GUI. I recall reading a paper by Apple on how to make good icons.

Anyway, just my 2 cents

What makes a GUI modern?

Flexibility -> KDE/Gnome win hands down

Simplicity -> MacOS wins hands down.

Eye Candy -> MacOS wins hands down.

Power -> KDE/Gnome win hands down

Most Common -> Had to give WinXP something it could win :p

 Hate the *!@ cursor

Ok, I am a deep fan of the UNIX system and a supporter of KDE. But what I hate most about it is, not the fonts but the cursor. The black mean cursor and the almost always locking panel. Click on an application on the panel and there appears the awful looking small rectangle under the cursor that kind of shows the application is starting. But when you move the cursor around, that rectangle hesitates to move, smears all over the window and in the meantime your panel is locked, etc.

Windows with ObjectDesktop/WindowBlinds thing looks awesome (unfortunately). And the CursorXP thing is promising though cursors I've seen for it are quite stupid looking.

Stabilitywise the OS part of the Unix systems are by far superior than XP. I love FreeBSD for instance. But UNIX world still needs a decent looking GUI. Sorry OSX fans but when using OSX I feel like I'm using an outdated/fake UNIX. Apple tried to hide everything UNIX about it under the Aqua.
