As a newbie (yes, I still consider myself one) I got caught up with Mandrake 7.2 ... pretty, flashy, and adequate, but found it difficult to get peripherals working correctly. Same with RedHat 7.2 (sorry guys it doesn't recognize my printer and there's no sound no matter how hard I tried to configure it). Now it's SuSE 7.3 Pro .... configured my printer in a heartbeat, ditto for the sound card. I'm not flaming any one distro over another. You've got to find what works for you and use that. They all have their flaws and benefits. I have yet to try BSD, so no comment there.

The GNU is a TRUE.

There are two dist. Redhat (aka suse, mandrake etc.) and Deb.

Visit please sourceforge or other open source site. Then go to download page. And what you see?? SuSu 7.0, 7.1, ....,...,...

I want ask you? That is the operation system?? This is just Windows 95-98-2000. Linux must be *UNIX.

And one more. I am russian and I now that the best locale and locale config in Debian.

What the default FTP on RedHat clones?? wu-ftp! Many-many-many bugs!!! If a hacker have broken the windows system - this is little bad news. I a hacker broken Linux - Oh!!! Your telnet, ftp and other defaults servers (like in windows) will be a big hole in the system!!

Башкой надо думать!! Если вы ядро скомпилять не можете, то о чем вообще речь??

are very hackable i aint a hacker and aint interested in their nonsense typin
But to add debian has the best pms (package management system)
Redhat package management or rpm's as we know them are just pure dependency hunting.
I run debian.
I started out with redhat 5 and i recommend any newbee to start with either redhat / madnrake or suse the choice is yours.
They are good introductions to linux but if you want to upgrade your packages its a nightmare after redhat 5 went to 6 etc all the way to 7 and 7 there is no other words other than nightmare i tried building packages from source forget it they completely ballsed it. Went to debian i knew what i was doin roughly with linux now. SO i though what the hey.
used it for a bout month set the dist to unstable.
And guess what ii get the latest packages straight download and its excellent beats any other os. Before Debian i used to dual boot between redhat and win2k after i used debian for a while i didnt see any poin on havin any other os installed so i only have debian right now its my desktop os and its the local home server aswell (dual p2-350 396 meg ram)
debian is extremly fast on bootup n shutdown comapred to redhat although i only do this for kernel upgrades.
This box supplies adsl internet connection to my dad n bros win98 machines it just rocks.
As For the actual debate Again i would have to say the best os for runnin kde is debian.
Why do i say this ? apt-get update
and thats that no having to upgrade kde from source no need to upgrade kde by gettin new version on cd's and goin through distribution upgrade. Its clean simple and very effective. I have been using unstable for a while and have had no major glitches and superb uptimes.
But again From what i hear rh7.2 has sorted out rh7's bugs.
Im not trying to flame any other linux based distro They are all excellent and do the job better than m$ can and will ever be able to do. m$ is just a company that rips off the unfortunate new pc owner who knows nothing and it does it by blatently stealing *bsd / mac / linux ideas and even code (*bsd / mac). I love the gnu/gpl cos m$ cant use it in anyway ha ha ha ha ha without revealing their source
The ppl behind the gnu rock. linus torvalds if u come across this man i have to say u are a genius.
but in imho debian is the best for kde maybe not the best distro for every1 but certainly the best for kde as it stays up to date.

I use Gentoo both on a few servers and on my workstation... It rocks... It's like debian, but entirely from source (although binary packages can be made as well)... And the users of gentoo don't feel all god-like like debian users think do... You guys really should give it a try! Ofcourse it's only RC6, but it's stable enough to use as a daily OS, i use it every day... KDE is well taken care of, because 2 guys of the Gentoo crew (including myself ;) work _almost_ solely on KDE.. so we have the latest KDE, a few hours after it's released, and we have a _big_ deal of apps... Is there an app that you use, but isn't in gentoo? Just let me know, and it's added in a matter of hours... Trust me, gentoo opens a new world! :) See ya! (Check it out, http://www.gentoo.org)

Don't get confused. SuSe Distribution is just the best and easiest of all. I hate to say that, but it si just German Quality.

I use Mandrake 8.0 just need to install, configure it and its up for 6 months without problem now... great stuff! Viva Mandrake !

My final decision goes to SuSE. It not only has everything I need, but any kind of annoyance to wanna be, or so to say hackers are all workable to whatever is needed. RPM -ivh --nodeps --force, etc. It can be as minimalistic as any other distro. As well I can also have complete control installing any tgz, gz, or bz2 the same way compiling and putting it anywhere I feel like - in makefiles. So the self indulged hackers of naught but ignorance realize that any filesystem is workable to thine preference. Feel the real power of SuSE, it does anything any other distro can do and more
