some wallpapers, even if they do not mention KDE directly, are really great with a {standard, tuned} KDE desktop. It would be a shame to censor such great artworks, just because the author was clever enough not to overload his picture with bloated text, just to have a hypothetical reference to KDE.

anyway, what does ``kde related'' means, for a wallpaper ? nothing to me.

just my .02 euros.

 Solution?

Perhaps we can create two Wallpapers categories, one category (or group of categories) for KDE-related wallpapers, and one for the "kool" wallpapers. At least that would give us a visual filter as to whether or not it's worth looking at. (Oh, and I would tend to say that any materials considered "obscene" should probably be removed from the site... I really don't think this is the appropriate forum for it. IMHO, of course.) 8) -dT-

The now sleeping site themes.org used to allow obscene material, but only for users who were logged in and had it enabled in their preferences.

Good idea that we could use here as well. I don't mind seeing some of these wallpapers, but I don't relish my mom looking over my shoulder when I check out anything new on kde-look.

precisely. I mean, look at the wallpapers which come bundled with KDE - according to some users, wallpapers like that shouldn't be available from the KDE wallpaper page! Look at what fools you're making of yourselves! KDE-Look is about providing (and i quote) "Eyecandy for your KDE Desktop" i.e. stuff that looks good.

How hard do you want to push your censorship? No more anti-microsoft wallpapers like fake BSOD's? but they're not KDE-related; and as someone else pointed out, neither (directly) is Tux. As for the 'adult' content (of which, i hasten to add, there actually isn't any - is Marilyn Monroe's skirt being blown up by an air vent porn?), the easily offended seem to enjoy clicking on those thumbnails with lots of flesh, don't they?

On themes.org they have Anime Art Computers Fantasy Holiday Music Nature Sports Vehicles, which seesm to be a good start.

Removing based on rating is just asking for abuse of the rating system, (and it doesn't add anything since you can sort on rating anyway).

Sorting on downloads/rating/recent in combo with categories should make it possible to find what you want without wavding through the whole collection.

I'd prefer one of the ideas mentioned in the comments, proposing to display only high rated ``off-topic'' wallpapers.

I might repeat myself, but ``kde-related'' wallpapers is a notion too subjective to be really fair. Some Wallpapers are especially great with a KDE desktop. Maybe they won't be that great with any other desktop, that's why I think they should remain accessible from kde-look.
They are kind of ``kde-related'' if you want, but not for every single person :)

 too much wallpaper

by anonymous on: Nov 8 2001

Score 50%

There are too much wallpaper compare to the rest and a new wallpaper is less interesting than a new theme engine (like liquid or QNiX).
On the new additions there are 75% of wallpapers and the 25% is everything else.
I think wallpapers shouldn't be shown with the other new items.

e.g. Any non-kde artwork that falls below 35% should not be visable from normal page.

Have a rejects section for people that feel the need to see everything.

Before that, the voting needs to be fixed. Something as simple as only allowing registered people to vote would do a lot to stop some of the voting abused on this site.

everything that's not in "some sense" related to kde, should be removed.. (for example, tux in the rain should stay, but manga shit has to go..)

after all, this is KDE-look, not MANGA-look or AnythingEelse-look..

 Is Tux related?

by anonymous on: Nov 7 2001

Score 50%

He might be good friends with Konqi, but he's certainly not in the KDE family. How can you decide what's "related"? On the other hand just because somebody put my favorite meaningless three letter sequence on a ugly picture does not mean I want to see it on this website.

I like the idea of having kde & non-kde sections for wallpaper. Then I'll have one place I can go for desktop decorations!

"related to" = "having _any_ link with" ? that certainly rules the manga out.. but I agree it's quite open to interpretation and therefore not a usable rule.. however I still think the not-so-kde stuff has to go, there are other places for it than on a KDE-artsite..

Offensive is all in a person's own point of view. For some people men kissing is disgusting, however for me it isn't. Of course it is kind of funny that the wallpapers with women on them are still there, but the one that I saw yesterday with a man on it disappeared already.

I do agree though that there are enough websites that have wallpapers for anything and everything. KDE related stuff belongs here, but the other stuff really should be seperated out at least.

Of course, that's just my opinion... :)

 Double Standards

by MessiahWWKD on: Nov 6 2001

Score 50%

Actually I took that one off because I felt like I was getting my point across nicely that some wallpaper is inappropriate for KDE-Look.org. Same with the other wallpaper which also was meant to show that there needs to be some quality control to this site.
As for the person who emphasized that the gay wallpaper was offensive, you do feel the same about the nude woman one right?
What I find funny though is that so many people cry censorship if an erotic wallpaper is taken down yet nobody has any second thoughts of taking down my Hitler von Pingus wallpaper (which was more related to Linux because it actually had Tux on it). That is the only one I myself did not take down. This shows that some censorship is okay which means that they should have no problem taking down other offensive material.
As for the suggestion that non-KDE stuff that falls below 35% should be taken down, I don't agree because why should people be able to post pictures of naked women on the site which will get high scores yet you can't post similar pictures of men?
Let's quit with the double standards!

The idea to take away stuff that is under 35 % is a good idea. Why do you complain about it ? If most of the people here rate gay stuff bad, it should be taken away. Then people (woman or man)
that like naked men are in the minority. The same would be ok, if suddenly here would be more girls than boys and they would rate naked girls bad. Then the naked girls wallpapers should be taken away.A good website like kde-look shouldn't host crap, only because every minority shall be supported.Crap is crap and the voice of the masses rules - if gay content or not !

And take all the non-KDE stuff crap off this site! Since you agree that KDE should only host what the majority wants, it should delete everything that isn't related to KDE since the majority, as the poll suggests, feels that'd be best.
Why do I complain about it? Because others complain that taking off these wallpapers would be censorship, and we can't have that now can we (except when it comes to political views with which I don't agree but will still make wallpapers of)? ;)

I think that the poll was flooded. This needed to be fixed ASAP. From reading comments to other submissions, I think people are generally against deleteing. Save for a loud majority who get offended quite easily ;-).
