openDesktop.org improvements - we want your ideas!

Hey everybody,
in order to improve and to optimize the usability and user experience, we have decided to investigate in improvements and additions of new features and functions to openDesktop.org. Important for us are our users out there. Therefore, we decided to ask you as our community to bring your ideas or wishes in so that we can collect them and implement them. As you may know, openDesktop.org is a huge community network including kde-apps.org, kde-look.org, gtk-apps.org, gnome-look.org and many others similar sites. So proposed changes could applied for these sites, too.

Which features do you think could be improved? Where do you see potential for further usability optimizations? Are there any functions or features that you're missing? Or do you know annoying bugs which bother you? Propositions for usability improvements are also welcome! Now it's your chance for a change.
You can find a user group where we collect everything. It's also a place where we can discuss several propositions and concepts. So come on and get involved. We're looking forward for your ideas.

cheers,

PS: we are aware of tags, it's already on the to-do-list ;)

 thumbnail previews

1) The thumbs are so small that you have to click on them to see.

this defeats the use of thumbs. A 320px wide preview would save the clicks and bandwidth of serving a fullsize image to everyone who just wants a better view then the tiny thumb offers.

2) Nothing should open in a new window - savvy surfers choose new tab for links like that or accept that it opens in same. Forcing an open in new window is old.

 Subscription to own content

I'd like to have some kind of automatic subscription to my uploaded content, so I can get a notification about new comments and such. By automatic I mean so that I don't have to subscribe myself to my own content, it could be in content properies (somewhere around the category dropdown) and it would be on by default.

Also there could me more "options" for viewing my own content list, like how many new comments are there since last checking (ie. 14 comments (3 new) ) and so...

 Addition - Fan subscription

Being a Fan of some artwork could also subscribe me to the content I'm being fan of. Because if I'm fan of it, then it means it's my favorite artwork and that (obviously) I'd like to know about updates of this artwork.

Therefore I think it should subscribe me to that content updates...

Fix POST and GET in forms

They're backwards!

When I search, I should be able to bookmark my results, or to hit Back from one of the results without having to shoo away a "Resubmit data?" popup.

When I vote, I shouldn't be able to accidentally send a friend a link that forces him to vote the same way.

These should've been obvious a long time ago, during all the voting issues. Can we finally make them work properly now?

 Items in wrong section

I would like to see the ability to report items that are miscategorized. Some people place items in wrong sections, and won't move them because they think it is in the right section.

I also agree with the person who said that the thumbnails need to be bigger and everything opens in a new window and a tab should be better... That person, I agree with him.

 new access API for knewstuff4

by xep on: Oct 18 2009

i mean at this moment knewstuff uses pre-generated xml stored on kde.org or somewhere else. and these pre-generated list are too "flat". for example one cann't navigate through complete "Wallpapers" list (xcontentmode=1x2x3x4x5x6x7x29x71x72x73x80 >>200 pages) beacuse of pre-generated xml contains ~30 items only.

so, it would be cool if we have ability to use custom filters from openDesktop.org sites directly (like /index.xml?xcontentmode=4&page=100 or something more intuitive/human readable).

other problem i see - knewstuff cann't filter "supported only" content because of absence of stricter package formats. for example items from "Icon themes" or "KDM Themes" sections are often cann't be installed with knewstuff by some reasons. i think we need some automaton for basic content checkings on upload.

anyways, openDesktop.org is cool! thank you for your great work!
