What me bothers about incscape is that it requires a lot of Gnome2 libraries.

To mess up a Linux box, you need to work at it; to mess up your Windows box, you just need to work on it.

Amen. I work as a graphical/web designer. I have worked extensively with Illustrator, Freehand, and Flash. My vote goes to Inkscape as best vector editor for the GNU/Linux platform. I don't agree with some of the prominent artists that have stated that Inkscape isn't ready for real work. I've used it in work I've done for clients, and think it's ready for prime time. Actually I've been toying with the idea of writing a series of tutorials for Inkscape -- probably to be released under the GNU FDL , but have wondered if there's much interest in something like that to justify the work involved?

That would be cool! Sure it is! I was thinking about it too because I've found work with Inkscape is 'Hawaii'. You can easily publish it e.g. on http://wiki.kde.org if you like. :)

Please, please write tutorials! I like inkscape very much, but I think with my limited experience in vector drawing applications I only scratched the surface of inkscape. I think good worked out tutorials will improve the artwork in the community. I would suggest some tutorials for special topics like icons, buttons etc. Something useful for everyday work and aomething for digging deep into inkscape. If you could write this and post them on kde-look, you would be a hero to me.

Hi,

i spend much time to find some good vector editor and only one solution is ready for real graphic and quick work i think. It is Sodipodi of course. But Inkscape is not bad, is on second place after Sodipodi. Karbon14 (have layers - very good!), Sketch and OOo Draw have third place. OOo Draw may be very powerfull with some missed tools for now.

In Sodipodi i see lots of usable changes in every version... check latest (e. g. intersect, trim...). I am waiting for better color palettes (all about colors), DROPSHADOW (i must export objekt to png, make shadow in Gimp and import it back to Sodipodi... is here other way? or have some vector editor in linux dropshadow?), layers and change curve shape by drag on it and deform it without vector editing may save lot of time.

Can u tell me why u think that Inkscape is better then Sodipodi? If it is realy better i can use it.

I can say that all is on graphic designer, what soft is good exactly for him. Or, it is not important what soft is used but important is final product.

I would use inkscape, but fink doesn't have a working 10.3 package for it, and I'm stuck in osx for the moment, untill YDL4 comes out. It's not so much of personal preference, but more of what is available to me.

You've missed it.
Fink have inkscape and sodipodi for panther (10.3) but in unstable tree.
I'm using inkscape and it is very stable and efficient.

I prefer Inkscape for SVG design on Windows, because the Sodipodi build can't export to PNG. Yeah Inkscape is full of GTK bloat but the interface is still better than Sodipodi's.

i completely agree that inkscape is better than sodipodi, a lot lot better!
it has 'almost' usable toolbars and great keyboard shortcuts. if you have any experience with vector drawing apps you should use inkscape, because sodipodi is so unusable and so not intuitive that it'll make you cry!

Me too I agree inkscape is better !

There are not a lot of ennoying windows and toolbars are not pushed under the window : it's usability wise better !

The first time I've tried inskscape I immediatly switched to it and removed sodipodi.

but the truth is that they are basicly the same thing.
i also think thet karbon as a great future.

I am using Inkscape now for testing. Inkscape and sodipodi have same tools but in some things is Inkscape better and in other Sodipodi. In inkscape i found troubles in using gradients and in Sodipodi may be good to add path tools (intersect, trim and more) to main panel or to some docking window. Of course it is more things missing in Sodipodi and Inkscape. I think Sodipodi and Inkscape are very good vector editors and i am vaiting for every update!
