How do I test the wallpaper to make sure it renders properly?

Good question... what SVG implementation are they using? I mean, most of the SVG renderers out there currently are pretty buggy still.

Is there a certain application that contestants can test with and expect the judges to see relatively similar results, without having to install KDE from CVS?

im not too excited about installing an alpha 1 either...

especially having to go through all the trouble of installing from source and then end up with a buggy computer.

Yes, to get a really good impression of what it will look like in KDE you will have to look at it in KDE. The biggest problem with svg renderers at these days seems to be rendering the blending modes used by Adobe Illustrator (which are not part of the svg specification) but in the mean time we can handle most of these.

I am positive that if you cannot test it yourself that there are people on this site and/or on the kde-artists mailing list that would help.

 Testing ...I think..

Testing I think... can be done via Konqueror (currently I'm using 3.3.1 from SuSE). I'm not a SVG or Linux expert but it works for me :-)

Except ksvg still has lots of things that aren't complete. (about 50% of the SVG spec).

Also, don't try to navigate while the KSVG is still drawing of konq will crash.

The thing to bear in mind here is that SVG background support is new to KDE. Bugs? yep. konqi freezes? Maybe. Will we resolve it so that it will work better than any Windows Manager in the intire universe?!? Of course!!! Will we dominate the the cosmos?!!? Probably not. After all we have yet to truly figure out the air speed velocity of an air borne swallow....let alone what kind of swallow!!!!!!!!

Ok, here's the hard bit...

Any idea why filters havn't been looked at yet, I think the SVG spec gives all the math.

Ok you silly wiper of other poeples bottoms... I would say the thing to do is contact the konqi team. Find out who is working on the filters. Then you could ask them directly.

 Hardcoded width

by chrislilley on: Dec 22 2004

Hmm "All wallpapers submitted should be 1024 pixels x 768 pixels."

Isn't that a bit pointless? If the SVG is in fact set to width="1024px" then a conformant viewer will display it at 1024 pixels regardless of screen size, not what is wanted for a wallpaper.

Instead, it would IMHO have been better to say "All wallpapers submitted should be designed to work well at 1024x768 resolution; they will be displayed full screen regardless of screen size, as SVG is scalable."

The SVG files would express this by width="100%" height="100%" viewBox="0 0 1024 768"

 SVG XGA?

as i understand, SVG are resolution-independend ... and the best way would be to have a separate section for SVG wallpapers (besides the 4 categories of different sizes of wallpapers)

this way, the svg's would be opened in konqueror directly (previews in png/jpeg are ok) and one would see, how konqueror/kde is rendering them

what do you think?
