The Tango Desktop Project exists to create a consistent user experience for free and Open Source software with graphical user interfaces.

The goal of the Tango Desktop Project is to provide a unified default native look and feel, a standard set of icons (with tools to transform this set for KDE and Gnome), cross desktop HIGs and a common subsystem for standardizing toolkits.

Dunno... the icons look like a mixture of KDE and Gnome icons, some more gnomeish, some with a touch of Mac - don't like that style. Seems to be something like that blue curve thing by RedHat, just a little more 3d. I would find it better if you could more easily change single icons of single actions of apps without changing undeliberately icons of some other app with that action.

Bring back the shark to Kanotix!

I don't like it, it looks like just a gnomification of KDE. If they really want to create an uniform icon style they shouldn't take those ugly Gnome icons but a different neutral icon style that doesn't belong to Gnome neither to KDE. Let's say Nuvola for example.

And for the widget style, isn't it reinventing the wheel again? Yes, we already have projects like GTK-QT, but also there's Metatheme which has just the same purpose and has been there for a while before. It implements much more different styles as this project, including Plastik, Redmond 2000 or Industrial, both for GTK2, QT/KDE and even Java (Swing) and even allows you to switch the button order of GTK applications (OK/Cancel instead of Cancel/OK).

I for one must applaud the members of the Tango Desktop Project (TDP) for their work. Whether or not their style appeals to all, it is great to see such work on Linux and of such caliber.

Cruise around some of the Windows 'tweakers' and you will be greeted with sensational desktops. These are the guys that take skinning to other heights. Some of the work being done (with the help of Windows Blinds for example) is phenominal. The TDP has brought this trend to Linux. It is clean and beautifully crafted with care.

Those members of the TDP should really be recognized not as people who are working on an icon theme but are trying to create a more fluid frame for future artists. Artists work by pushing pixels, not by coding and hopefully the adoption of the new standard can allow them to do as such and not rob their time messing with file names and odd bits of code.

An easier system is needed as the coding level of Linux users tends to leak over and make things unnecessarily difficult.

Great work and a great project.

I agree they need to be applauded but they are making mistakes very early on. The palette is fixed to old colours. No one has thought through the colour design properly. They also dont seem to be engaging the design community. We could have a great interface in no time if it was run like an open source program project.

Another possibility is running a competition with a prize from donations. Why dont the Look sites do this?

Most of the Look themes are much better than those in the tango set.

Will someone kill DesktopLinux.com and eat its babies...

Dont compare with windows, compare with MacOS. It can be beaten. Its already 4 years old anyhow.

How can anyone get a good impression from that piece of ^%it. Google Linux Desktop and its first on the list!
