New Websites for Qt Software

Today we launched two new platforms dedicated to software written with the Qt toolkit. Developers may announce and promote their software and get in contact with the users.



We launched Qt-Apps.org and Qt-Prop.org in cooperation with Trolltech, the creators of the very successful Qt Toolkit.

Qt can be used to build Open Source and proprietary Software. Because of that we have created two different web platforms. Qt-Apps.org is for Open Source software using the Qt Toolkit. QT-Prop.org is for proprietary Qt Software.



New Websites for Qt Software



In the future KDE-Apps.org will be used for KDE Applications only. All Qt only apps must be moved to the Qt-Apps.org or Qt-Prop.org. Please contact us via the contact form to get your project moved over. Your existing user account is also valid on Qt-Apps.org and Qt-Prop.org.

The number of proprietary Qt-only apps is not actually that large; there's Opera, Bibble, Syntext Serna and a few others. Is this really enough to sustain an entire website? As the maintainer of A Qt Blog, I check the less frequently updated sites less often, and I suspect I'd fail to notice a lot of updates and that the developers might not bother to register on your site anyway. I would suggest a Qt Apps page only.

There's actually a lot of commercial Qt apps. Go to the Trolltech website and see just a few of them: Google Earth, Skype, Photoshop Album, DivX, Bitrock, and lots more. There's also a growing set of dual licensed open/proprietary Qt software, such as KDReports, PyQt, etc.

Qt is the only professional quality crossplatform GUI framework. It makes sense that many crossplatform commercial software uses Qt. But surprisinging, a third or more of Trolltech's licensees are using Qt for single-platform software.

could we then also ban non-free software from www.kde-apps.de altogether (and for that matter ban non-free content from www.kde-look.org aswell)?

this is a community site, with free software users and 99% free software. we should not waste money, bandwidth and space on non-free software (and we should not promote it)!

after all the KDE-Project is about software freedom and not only about making fancy looking software, or am i mistaken?

Trolltech has two versions of their Qt libraries: one for Linux ONLY!!! that's both "free as in free beer" (very important) and "free as in free speech" (equally as important, but not totally imperative), and one for all other platforms in the universe that's proprietary payware. This is why you will never, EVER see KDE ported to Windows as an alternative shell.

Seriously, if you want to make a multiplatform program, use GTK, or have different builds using different toolkits (Cocoa/Carbon/Aqua for MacOSX, GDI for Windows...). Trolltech is a money-loving corporation that threw a bone to the Linux community. And if Trolltech wants to prove me wrong, then show us a version of Qt that ANYONE can use on ANY operating system for FREE*.

*Free does not necessarily mean free speech, but does mean free beer.

well yuor facts arent up-to-date.
qt4 has free-as-in-beer and free-as-in-speech versions (GPLed) for all operating systems.
qt3 was the last one to only have free version for free operating systems.

thats why the kde-project is porting many of their kde4 apps to windows.

but it really hasnt got anything to do with my original post, which was about banning non-free content from these community sites (not matter which toolkit).

I don't think that's a good idea.
Every developer should be able decide which license they want to use, and every user should be able to decide what kind of licenses they prefer.
If we start to split up kde-apps.org into different subsidaries based on license type, it will be a lot harder for users to find what they are looking for.

well, i believe all software should be free as in freedom!

by offering free webspace to non-free projects we are spending money on software that restricts all kde-users' freedom. not only that this money could be used to promote free software instead, but we also create the impression that it really doesnt matter whether software is free or not.

i don't want to have to check the license field on every content item to see whether it is licensed under a license that i know to be free.

the whole issue of licenses is really cumbersome, and for many users also confusing.
thats why kde-apps.de should take a stand for free software and tell its users: "dont worry about licenses and that stuff, we guarantee that the content offered here respects your rights as a user and your freedom"

But demanding a certain type of license is not freedom at all.

And even with opensource licenses, things can be cumbersome.
