Planux
Description:

Planux is a new, starting Gamer's Ubuntu derivative that is looking for more graphical developers, who will at this point work on themes, and after that, GDM and USplash. Currently we are using XFCE, but might switch to LXDE. We are also looking for programmers to make custom applications that will be helpful to gamers. The first beta iso is out, but until our SourceForge page is finished registering, I need the e-mail addresses of the people who need the iso so I can invite them to my online storage folder on box.net. We have an IRC channel on Freenode (irc.freenode.net), which is #planuxos. The website currently is being mocked up by myself and oming101.

 CD Creation...

You should have a look at http://reconstructor.aperantis.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=14&Itemid=37 reconstructor - it should be the exact thing you're looking for. With regards to the distro itself, what kinds of things do you plan to change/exclude/include? Who will v1.0 be aimed at?

 more ideas.

 by NEUR0M4NCER on: Jul 5 2008

More thoughts... just because i'm bored:
1. You should put all of the most popular free games on, ready to play - even if that means a DVD distro.

2. You might be better off *not* using the Ubuntu moniker... Why not decide on your final distro packages, find a theme that no other distro uses as its own, and give it a new name. How about Planux? (www.planux.org is available, and would probably be fairly cheap)... or any name you like. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu already has a couple of gaming versions anyway - one that is meant to run of live disc to get Windows Gamers to play.

Regards

Thanks for the link to reconstructor! I thought I was gonna have to do all of this by hand! I still would like to use Ubuntu, because it is a very stable base, and unlike Debian, it has all the proprietary drivers gamers might need for their graphics/sound cards.

Hmm.. Planux.. could work. still, like I already said, I prefer Ubuntu, but a name change wouldn't matter.

It looks like it is going to be a DVD distro, but later I might be able to make a CD version by making a stripped-down text installer.

Hmm.. reconstructor isn't working for me, it gets to the part with building the iso, then it stops doing things.

 mark (logo) for Playbuntu

A humble suggestion for the Playbuntu mark (or logo)

http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/7461/playbuntucf1.png

the idea is to use the circles recalling that so classic joystick red balls from coin-op machines - and the wood colour recalling the wood cabinet were coin-op machines were used to be builded on

Well, that's a good idea! I will think about using it as I get farther into the actual design.

I've been working on my own distro for a while now. I've been wanting to make a custom distro that yes 1. enables gaming, but also caters for normal desktop and business usage. So if u guys are interested, we could keep developing off what i've already started, which currently runs most windows games and has some nice themes. If not, I'd love to contribute to this project in any way needed. I do have a bit of programming experience, especially in C# and HTMl but yeh, would love to help!

That's cool! Yeah, I'd like some screenshots. Maybe afterwards I could take an .iso, since my 40G HDD is just sitting under my 80G doing nothing..

Currently the iso is going to be using the normal Ubuntu USplash, but if I get a Playbuntu one I will put it in.

It depends on the circumstances whether it will be 7.10 or 8.04-based, probably 7.10, since Gutsy's more stable.

Yes ubuntu 7.10 is a possibility for more stability on the first version of this system.
