Linux is a kernel.

other
Description:

I get pretty tired of seeing all this "Linux" propaganda, where the people obviously are talking about the GNU operating system with the Linux kernel, but are for some reason seeing Linux as the whole operating system. I would never use Linux as my main operating system, since Linux is a kernel :D I do however use the GNU OS extensively, with the Linux kernel. Please step up and stop reffering to Linux as something it is not!

What are you talking about? Windows has no package manager at all. How would that solve anything? Windows is also non-free.

"[...]distributions of linux [...] arent free"

All GNU/Linux distros are free as in speech, if not free as in beer. You are saying that some versions of GNU/Linux are anti-freedom in the same way as windows (as in freedom of speech, not beer). You are wrong. The Linux Kernel is licensed under the GNU GPL, and therefore derivatives of it must be under the same (or a compatible) license, with the same freedoms for the user. All Linux-based kernels must be free as in speech.

"windows[...] does get regular updates"

No. No, it does not. October 25, 2001 - January 30, 2007 is not a short release cycle, nor is it of a regular or uniform length, as compared to previous Windows releases.

"atleast windows is a real operating system"

What can I even say to that...?

In short, please go away and stop being an idiot, tw1ggz.

Never! I shall stay and watch this groups stupididity. Once again....what the hell does this group have to do with any desktop environment, theme, icon set, etc......opendesktop does not distribute the linux kernel or develop it...you are all idiots for putting this useless group on here. http://linuxgangster.org would be more suitable for this group...plenty of "is linux an OS or a kernel" talk there.

I was mentioning problems with the package manager in FreeBSD/GUI in DesktopBSD, then you tell me to use Windows. Since Windows does not offer a better package manager (there isn't even such a thing in Windows), why would that be a better option?

So? If they are not free, they are breaking the GPL, so they are illegal distributions. What does the fact that there are illegal distributions available have anything to do with it? An illegal distribution is not better than a pirated Windows system.

But why are we arguing about Windows?! I do not like how Windows works, and I do not support non-free software, why would I use it? If you like it, switch yourself.

Are you talking about Linux From Scratch? This is not downloadable from kernel.org. If you are talking about the Linux kernel from kernel.org, no, Linux is a kernel. The kernel is a little part often used in an operating system called GNU. I don't think GNU has standardised on a package manager either though, wich could be seen either as a bad or good thing.

Of course GNU hasnt standardized or even attempted to standardize a package manger since every leave dev of every linux distro wants to try and reinvent the wheel and they all end up sucking anyway. As for the desktopbsd packagemanager, yea, the gui sucks. Use a command line and quit being a ninny. pkg_add -r apphere is not hard. nor is cd /usr/ports/irc/irssi && make install clean

APT and RPM are a plethora of different package managers. (If you haven't noticed, everything else is a special purpose minority: e.g. Gentoo doesn't have binary packages, so these formats wouldn't work for them; Slackware doesn't have a true package manager at all)
Additionally, you can install RPM packages on a Debian system and vice versa, using Alien.

The post was about a GNU STANDARDIZED PKG MANAGER ...and you run off naming three or four different ones for three or four different distributions. Those arent examples of a STANDARDIZED GNU PACKAGE MANAGER SINCE THOSE PACKAGE MANAGERS ARE MAINTAINED BY THE DISTRIBUTION DEVELOPERS. Sit down young padawan and follow my lead.

What I meant is that the need for a single standarized package manager isn't crucial. That is because:
1. Most people won't install packages not in their distro.
2. Foreign packages usually have to be crafted for a specific distro, not for a specific package manager, so even if everyone used the same package manager, it wouldn't solve the problem.

It is not hard if you know Everything. But for me installing a port does not just involve what you told me; it also involves finding it under all folders and subfolders. It is not impossible to do, but having a GUI wich searches through everything quickly, gives you what you want and lets you install it right there is a lot more effective (if done right). I don't think anyone here would argue on this (except maybe you).

And for pkg_add -r, there is a similar process, but instead of looking in folders, you need to open a web browser and search the FreeBSD database there (not as bad as the ports, but still worse than a good GUI.)

The choice of package managers could also be a good thing. Without it, apt/dpkg from Debian might not have existed, wich seems unrivalled even today. And no, my first distro was not Ubuntu, it was Red Hat. And I have tried several others also. My conclusion is simply that, on the whole, Ubuntu works the best for me, and apt/dpkg seems to be the best package manager.

But anyway, this discussion was about not calling the Linux kernel an OS, not about wether GNU/Linux is better or worse than FreeBSD, Haiku, Reactos, AROS, Syllable, etc.

read the freebsd handbook, for sure one thing NOONE will dispute (and if they do they are plain idiots) FreeBSD has the best documentation out there. If you dont want to read, then you shouldnt be trying to get into any sort of linux or bsd at all because they ALL have things you need to read about in order to learn.

NO duh, if you havent noticed up there i did say the woman had learned how to use apt so i am well aware of linux distributions having package management....now tell me..if you ever watch distrowatch and read up on any of those distros....why are so of them trying to port over *BSD package management tool? For instance gentoos portage, draco linux is using pkgsrc from netbsd...i can go on and on....I definately know more than you on this subject. *pats you on the head*

Those distros are mainly source-based. I think ports won't replace APT or RPM for most people, since they're not very well suited to managing binary packages.

BTW, APT also has am useful source package management system (apt-get source). What I'm missing is the ability to automatically fetch the latest development version of a package from the project's version control system; since that's APT, it could automatically install the needed VCS clients.

FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD also have binary packages and tools to fetch them
:) For instance in FreeBSD
pkg_add -r amarok ....boom your done....deps and all no compiling. the end.

Freebsd is porting Gentoos portage now and it looks like *bsd are far behind Linux in many aspects (nothing better than APT or Gentoo Portage). Which distros are trying to port *bsd package management tools? You must be kidding :D
