Have been approached about the donation of an irish server to irc.sindustries.org. This will make it easier on alot of you across the ocean folks to connect :) We will see if this pans out. I would really like an ircd thats located across the ocean from the US :)

That's cool. The main IRC network I use has servers all over in places like Portugal and Argentina and stuff. It's good to have a huge web of networked servers all over the world. Plus Irish accents are awesome. Not that they really show on IRC or anything...

Id be willing to consider allowing anyone here who feels kind hearted enough to donate an ircd also. Shell users need not apply, home internet connections need not apply unless youre sitting on a t3 or something :P, VPS users will be considered, but would much rather stick to using dedicated machines.

The bad thing about linking a huge number of servers is the fact that they all come with someone or someones who all want to play netadmin. I am not trying to run a network that has more cheifs than indians you dig? lol

In yet another desperate attempt to create something out of my irc network, I have opened up #GNU/Linux on irc.sindustries.org. This channel will be for general discussion such as your favorite distribution, why you hate other distributions, your favorite desktop environments or window managers, why you hate other window managers or DEs, etc....

Frankly, I am disappointed in opendesktop users as a whole. You all seem to be leeches that don't care about conversing with other artists and themers. I would think you all would be interested in this idea. There are 4 regular users that show up and say they will idle. In truth, TheRob and myself are the only ones that show up regularly and actually stick around trying to create something. So then when someone new shows up...they go "TWO PEOPLE HERE? WTF?" I can't blame them. I am wondering the same thing. Everyone that shows up expects more...but none of you are willing to stick around and help make more of it. Think about it folks.

 FreeNode?

I wonder... why an external IRC-Server and not simply Freenode? Most users will allready have FreeNode in there server-list so it won't be an problem for them to join that channel, too. (They don't need to add an additional server to there list and can simply take a look into it.)

Freenode has strict guidelines and rules, they are fascists. I promote free speech. THeir rules require you to register only ##channels unless you get an approved #channel (like its possible to run out of channel names, how anal?) in order to get a stupid looking @unaffiliated/yournick cloak. On sindustries, your host is masked on connect, and we are willing to customize it on request with no requirements from the user. For instance: in order to have my stupid @unaffiliated/twiggz cloak... i had to drop 3 #channels... because they were not ##channels...this is retarded in my opinion. Most of their staff are ignorant. Freenode has been "owned" more times than efnet, undernet, and dalnet put together. That is a fact. I want to start a small community of opendesktop users (and we are growing little by little). Hell, I tried getting approved for a #channel there and waited 3 months...just because its a big network doesnt mean its a good network thats well administrated. On the contrary, its admined rather poorly. My opendesktop channel is still small, but gaining a few users every week. We must have something appealing going on :) The simple fact is, freenode staff does not care about the quality of the service they provide you, they feel they do not have to...they feel that since they are large enough, they can sit with their thumbs in their ass and worry about other things like whats new for the xbox or ps3. Yes, my network is just starting, its small, why should I not try to create a network where admins care about the quality of your chat experience and do more for the end user than freenode will?

and what makes it "external"? its not like opendesktop has any affiliation with ANY irc network. Ive already talked with Frank, the fellow who basically runs this joint..there is no official irc affiliation for this website...so what makes me opening a #opendesktop channel on my network EXTERNAL? Thats just a stupid thing to say, sorry.

I'm actually really pleased with the admins on this network. Despite tw1ggz's troll-like behavior on opendesktop, he's actually a really nice guy. It seems he really goes out of the way for the users on his IRC network. HE contacted ME about getting a custom vhost. I didn't have to give him anything. I've been searching for networks like this since I've been on IRC. It's really a shame he doesn't have more users. I think they'd really appreciate how free you are on this one. A while ago I was on IRCstorm and I got banned for saying the name of another netowork... in a private message with another user. That's right, they were like wiretappers. They had special IRC services for monitoring your PM's and banning you if you said something they didn't like. And what I don't understand is how networks like those are within the top 100 on searchirc.com yet Sindustries can't even make it on searchirc.com. It's like people WANT to have their internet freedoms taken away.

So, I hope you understand why we don't use Freenode. I hope even more that you'll start using this network and help attract more users.

Well, Freenode is somehow THE OpenSource IRC-Network. And openDesktop is pretty much an OpenSource community. So most users here will know about Freenode and maybe also visiting it regulary. Now, since most users are allready on Freenode it seems much more appropriate to create an channel there instead of using an completly unknow IRC network which currently nobody is using.

Hey, there are around 20 users on that server right now. And that number keeps going up every week. I'm surprised how fast it's growing. If you want to help us grow then please do. But if you're just gonna complain how Freenode still has more users, you're not really helping anyone.

It's pretending spontanious actions like "Oh let's see what currently is happening in that channel". And that's actually how most users of an channel come from.

Lots of opensourced projects decide to take their projects irc channel elsewhere, in fact the OFFICIAL debian channel is on OFTC, NOT FREENODE. I wonder why? I bet it has something to do with the fact that freenode is run by idiots.
