No More Ubuntu Respins!

Description:

Aren't there enough already? Just off the top of my head, I can think of ubuntu, xubuntu, kubuntu, fluxbuntu, lubuntu, ubuntu muslim edition, ubuntu christian edition, easy peasy, ubuntu "ultimate" edition, MoonOS, Mythbuntu, WattOS, PC/OS, Linux Mint (plus all of its community editions), and there are plenty more on distro watch just waiting to be added to the list! What the hells the difference? New backgrounds, a copy of the quran? Different themes? Its pretty damned annoying when ubuntu comes out with a release, because then all you see on Distrowatch is seperate new release entries for every single ubuntu respin there is. Sure! Lets change up some themes and add some applications that are no doubt readily available in their apt repos already and make an iso and call it a distribution! Enough already!

Haha that sucks... Looks exactly the same as ubuntu lol. I can't believe noobs just get ubuntu, put some icons on the desktop, include some software that can be used on standard ubuntu and call it a distro. Pffft...

 Sanity from Ubuntu Community?

 by Fri13 on: May 5 2010

Ubuntu is more and more coming like a disease for Linux. There is too many believing that Ubuntu is the OS and Linux is just a kernel.

Too many believes that they can make own OS just by configuring other style as default, new wallpaper and little tweaks with configs. They have no idea that new distribution needs own precompiled packages with own repositories. And own OS needs to be something as complex as Linux or HURD is. How many really would know how to start developing a OS? Not even GNU could do that (HURD) what Linux community did with Linux what Linus started.

Linux is getting more and more popular but same time there is more and more users who do not understand the whole FOSS history and what Linux is. They are so fanatics about Ubuntu when they get all needed softwares by free and they believe it is Ubuntu (Canonical) what develops those for them.

Then they start to be a wanna be hackers (in the real sense, not a cracker!) believing they are masters when they make a own edition of Ubuntu.

Now we almost have more Ubuntu editions from new users than Linux has distributions. No wonder why world has started to be in situation where Ubuntu is replacing Linux and there start to be more and more commong see questions "Which one I should choose, Linux or Ubuntu?".

Too many believes Linux and Ubuntu are two different OS. People just does not understand what distribution is, or what OS really is.

Are those Ubuntu editions threat for Linux? Is the Ubuntu community threat for balanced sanity for Linux future?

I have started to believe it is.

I don't know how many times I have found
a "distro" that I have found interesting
for my netbook just to after a while notice
that its not a distro, its ubuntu in disguise.

Canonical = Microsoft 2.0

I usually check the data from the distribution to find out is it a new one or based to other existing one.

There is not such bad thing for ripping off existing distributions, but when distributors does not do anything else than just make a new default and then use originals package repositories etc, it starts to be just fake more and more.

Such things could, and should, be done by metapackages. So you can just install such and then create new user to get wanted desktop as default.

Well, Cannonical, with original Ubuntu, just gives an example to others by hiding that Debian is the real distro to use ! So I think it's fair that copycats are copied !
Though I find that last version of Ubuntu is a good Debian presentation work, I go on thinking it's useless. Debian is still better and still it's the one to use as the best Debian based distro, simply.
Community should rather gives its energy to Debian, than to promote copies.

If I change from Debian, I'll surely switch to Fedora anyway ! The 12 looks terrific guys !

Ciao

Can we all say unoriginal idea and completely ugly? Arent there already like three or four other ubuntu based distributions aimed at media center use? Good grief.
