Well this is not a group in support of Windows. It is a group that recognize Windows is not all bad.

Windows has a good security model, it is easy to use, it has a very good driver model(which means it is very stable), it has games, and lots of specialty software.

Windows (Vista and above) is more stable than Linux by design. I cannot help you are a fanboy.

In Windows the video driver runs in user-space. That is not so in Linux. This causes more instability in Linux than Windows. Learn to think and stop being a fanboy.

Hi you all.
I agree with you about to hate Windows haters. But when you say that Windows is more stable... I think a lot of linux users are laughing out loud. You know, I'm in a far country called Madagascar. Money here is one of the weaker on earth. I admit that i'm using Windows, but a piracy one. Why? Because with the Licence cost I can feed my family for half a mounth. Then, using Windows, you are always frightened to get Virus from your friend Flash Disk. And if you didn't applied update updates for your virus protection (also Piracy), it's down for you.
Miracle... I just install Ubuntu 9.04 and had for one hour of updates (average of 20kB/s), the soud works, graphics too, I have an office suite, and if I'd like to have a lot of multimedia softs, there is also mythbuntu, or ubuntu studio. They are all stable, are not afraid of Virus, and FREE. May be you have to much money in your bank to pay License right and left, but i have not.

It is simple as this:

Linux is good for the price, but it cannot be claimed to be the best in every aspect. In truth the stability between Windows and Linux is very similar. Windows can be more unstable if ran as admin for day to day use, because viruses can run in kernel mode; this can effect stability. The same could be said for Linux, but there are no viruses in the wild. I hold the belief there are nearly no viruses for Linux because it is uncommon.

Let's make an analogy to wildlife. Is the more well-known and more pandemic virus going to be infecting a rare beetle or cattle? Cattle of course.

I am not going to say Windows is inferior, because it is not; it is just more abused by its users and gets unneeded flack.

I had to go on my laptop to download Firefox because i could not get to the download page before it crashed because it was so slow. No tftp or .doc support. Xp is defiantly the best windows, no question. I have been running Xp and Linux for about 2 years and both have never completely crashed. And trust me I put my computer to use.

and lets face it life is way better without Windows and Gates.

No comment on utter crap, unless you can provide some factual argument which we can look at and tell you why we may think we can agree or disagree with it.

However you don't necessarily need to pay for Windows to use it, e.g. you need to use it at work because they are providing the computers and you are not suppose to fuck around with the OS.

On the other hand you may still indirectly pay for Windows even though you don't use it. When you buy a computer it probably come with Windows; if you build your own you may be buying parts developed for Windows, e.g. some of the cost of a graphics card may be for DX which you don't get to use without Windows.

I believe you, I had that problem years ago when I was using XP, that was what made me turn to other system. I wouldn't say I necessarily hate Windows though, I just have enjoyed trying different OS and learning now stuff, and just haven't had the need to run Windows for years.

That said I am setting up a spare WinXP box for gaming, perhaps I would actually know what I am doing now and it would run smoothly. But no comment at this stage, I am looking forward to do lots of tinkering on this spare box though, I am going to run all the different OS.

Yes, but it is rather impossible to use. I can use it, but I have never managed to get it to mount a TCP/IP connection even when it detected the ethernet card.

Plan 9 takes the everything is a file paradigm and applies it to ever aspect of the operating system. Even the mouse and individual windows are files. If I remember right a window can be closed with something like "echo 1 > /y/objects/windows/web_browser/1/status/close"

Of course that is not even close to the correct path, because I forget how it works, but it is similar to that. Of course there is a GUI way to close windows but it is very unintuitive.

I suggest Plan 9 as it is very educational, but it was terrible in its implementation.

I didn't join Linux because I hate Windows, but because I had to (Windows crashes). Windows isn't bad, but because of so much softwares it's really difficult to see where the next bug will pop up. Linux (I use Ubuntu) so far seems to have no problems and you can personalize it more. But it doesn't matter. I am starting to like Ubuntu over Windows actually. If I had a choice, I would keep Ubuntu rather than get Windows for say, free. It's not because I hate Windows, but because like Ubuntu more. Other people like PC gamers would definitely prefer Windows, because of it's natural support. It's a matter of choice. But I guess I could say people who have not tried different OS's will remain close-minded until they do so...

So yes people, there is a good and bad to everything. Windows has compatibility to a lot of software, while Linux has it's own software. I prefer Ubuntu Linux over Windows, but that really doesn't matter. As long as you are happy with it (but you don't know what you are missing out on until you try Linux!)

Linux has its share of problem too, no OS is perfect, but if you prefer Linux over Windows, then hey, all power to you!! At least you think through it and make a conscious choice rather just following the masses, and I do think the dominance MS have in the consumer OS market is unhealthy and is decremental to us all, including MS users, so all the power to those providing an alternative.

Hi you all
I don't remember the link where i found this ridiculous text about windows seven which said: "there's a critical bug in Windows 7 that is not possible to fix". this text was on yahoo!, in an interview of a Microsoft technician. I think there's is no bug that could not be fixed, but the real fact is that Wnindows needs a big review, from the base, to give a real stable OS.

Political reasons? So let's talk about politic. According to the stability of Windows, I already have a lot to say about. But in the political side, I think you read enough news about Microsoft comportment. Bill Gates have enough money to give to manufacturers to make there products (only) well recognized by Windows. From Linux, manufacturers and developpers don't get anything, so they don't dare develloping much for that great OS. Of course, I would be tempted to do the same with a great amount.
And what about Microsoft License that we pay with a computer? You may say "you just have not to buy it!". But 80% (may be more) of computers for sale comes with Windows. WHY? Why not give choice to consummers? Only 20%? I must admit it's not fair from Microsoft.
PS: Forgive me for some mistakes you could see in the text but English is not my native language.
