 Amarock!

by TheRob on: Aug 12 2010

Score 50%

Well, did some qss and icons, and modified
the amarok source code to rid the forced
even row colors..... amarok is really
a pain in the ass to theme, some icons
come from the icon theme, some are it's own,
so, as long as you use oxygen icons, you're
ok, if not, then youre pretty much fucked.

A scrot of how it looks: http://img807.imageshack.us/img807/8210/amarock.png

still tho, amarok is by far the superior
music player there is :)

Skinning on scrot done with qss, amarok
native skinning and bespin.

Amarok cant stream to an icecast or shoutcast server. Exaile can. :)

http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/FAQ#How_can_I_use_Amarok_to_stream_to_my_own_radio_station.3F

answer: you cant!

Exaile and rhythmbox have both the features of amarok, and it seems exaile has one that amarok doesnt :)

...and? so if you use outcast or shoutcast
then you prolly better use exaile then huh?

Afaik, exaile is just a gtk clone of amarok
1.4.

Tried exaile a couple of times, it's ok,
but not great.... like amarok :)

Well done with Amarok, it looks really good. How did you do that? What tools did you use to make the GUI?

As usual, tint2, openbox, terminator, conky. Minimalist and sexy. Forget linux. I forgot why I liked BSD so much.

The screenshot isnt really all that special, but freebsd is. Even Linus Torvalds said himself, if 386BSD had been out at the time, he would not have bothered with the linux kernel.

Nice, I usually like your screens, as they
represent the true unix tech-like look
that has been around since the 80's :)

Neat terminal emulator also :) ,not by
any means neater than yakuake, but still
neat ;-)

 MoC > MPD > Everything else =P

Openbox on my little netbook running Terminator in 'psuedo-tiling' mode (thanks to configurable keybindings)
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/4343/201008062357041024x600s.png

Regarding audio players,
MoC is the player I mostly use for audio these days. Cleanest sound and lowest interference levels of any player I've tried (on any OS) and thanks to teh patch I submitted some time ago (which has been further improved and tweaked by the devs), I can use EQ presets with it. :D

@TheRob
I have to say, that's one of the nicer Amarok setups I've come across. Nice work, mate.
I've seen some Amarok screenies with some weird rainbow stripes across the progress bar.... wtf's up with that?! O_o

@tw1ggz
I can't see your screenshot :(
The page refuses to load for me.
Would you mind uploading on another host, if possible. I'm always eager to see what can be done with *box WMs.

Cheers~

Thx! well about sq... I'd say a player
named "deadbeef" is the best I've heard,
however, it's not nearly as good as amarok
so even tho I lose some sq (mainly very
high mid)
I gladly use amarok because it rocks!

However, if you honestly think there is
that big a difference with the sound of
the players I'd say yeah, use the one
with the best ofc! However, I have never
heard of anybody who is worried about sq
use a software eq?? really?? sounds good?

Well, I wouldn't consider myself an audio snob, but I do own some pretty decent electrostatic headphones (the type that comes with it's own amp)

I don't really rely on SQ when I'm on my desktop, since it's hooked up to the amp, but even then, I find MoC (and Cplay as well, though I don't use that as much) produces the cleanest sound.

The SQ I mainly use when I'm on my netbook hooked up to "good-but-not-great' earphones.

I actually have deadbeef installed on my desktop as well, and yes, it does sound pretty great, but I'd still choose MoC over it.

About the terminal, yeah, it's a single terminal, set to open borderless and fullscreen (through my rc.xml)... I've configured it to split horizontally or vertically, as well as switch between the various segments through Terminator's keybindings.
Only thing I 'cheated' on with regards to the scrot was to drag (resize) the middle section a bit (it usually splits 50:50)

Can't really get real tiling in OB unless I use PyTyle or an equivalent app, or madly mod your rc.xml =P

Headphones very rarely sound any good, so
I'm glad you have found a pair that does :)

I had to try cplay when you mentioned it :)
Well yeah, the sound is very dynamic and
highly transparent :) howevery, I still
do not see me using it as my main player
without a graphical user interface (highly
important for me) :) The sound was much
better then I expected tho, I'll give you
that, and yes, better then deadbeef imo :)

So thx for the info :)

Oh, and about your terminal, that is
absolutely not cheating man ;-)

Hei

This “rainbow stripes“ in Amarok is the mood bar. The progress bar is then coloured according to the mood of the music at that time. Looks a bit strange, but is sometimes a nice feature.

Anyways, looks cool.

Something I've been working on (when I find time) over the past few days. Started out as a 'design exercise', seeing how much I could matte down a theme without sacrificing usability, but I sort of grew attached to the palette and decided to keep it, for now.

Still a work in progress, but I'm quite happy with how it's turned out so far, and it's mighty usable (for me, at least)

Basic apps,
