 Still need 3.5

by Brandybuck on: Aug 16 2008

We still need 3.5. There's still some missing features in 4.1, it's still buggy around the edges. There's no reason why someone can't use both versions. Besides, 3.5.10 is coming soon, and the plan is to include it in ports.

That's why we need the .kde4 directory, otherwise if both versions use .kde there will be conflicts. But if you want to change it, you can set an environment variable KDEHOME.

A few days late on the announcement, but KDE 4.1.4 is in ports, and working fine. It's still considered an "early adopter" release, however, so it may not be for everyone.

 WIFI and FreeBSD

Hi guys. Just installed FreeBSD 7 x64 (a version made from scratch BTW) on my Alienware lappy next to Windows Server 2008 (heavily modded and optimized, I'm using the windows bootloader to boot both OS's) and now I got a small question. This laptop have a wifi card which only works in windows or linux (in linux it works either with kernel 2.6.27 or if you use ndiswrapper with a win98 driver, which means that the ndiswrapper option won't work on x64 versions of linux) and I wanted to know, is it possible to use the kernel in the linux compatibility layer as a "x64 capable ndiswrapper clone" to get my wifi going? and if it is indeed possible, how?

BTW: I'm posting from FreeBSD hooked with a LAN cable right now.
BTW2: Hi tw1ggz. Can you explain to me, What does that "Death to Mark Shuttleworth" part in your post means? Is something that you dislike about Ubuntu?

Your best bet is to visit forums.freebsd.org, and post there. Also let them know what wifi card/chip you have. FreeBSD does have support for lots of cards.

p.s. Of course, if you don't need 64bit, don't put yourself through the pain. For 99.7% of laptop users, it just doesn't make sense.

FreeBS has ndisgen which emulates a Windows environment for Windows wifi drivers. I am currently running ndisgen for my wifi card. It works.

Give it a try.

The problem with ndisgen is that like ndiswrapper it cannot use a x86 windows driver on x64 linux/freebsd.
