Hi everyone. Mandriva 2009 claims improved boot speed time. Like to get an idea of everyones boot up time. Here's the boot up comparison for my laptop.

Mandriva 2008, kernel 2.6.24.7: 1min33sec
Mandriva 2009, kernel 2.6.27: 46sec

Gotta love it.

The Linux OS has nothing to do with the faster boot time in this case. It is the Init version what Mandriva use. It is responsible for starting and executing all applications and services after the OS (Linux kernel) starts the Init.

You can speed it up by using prelink (what Mandriva does now automatically, I think), turning off system services what you dont need etc.

Yeah I agree. Boot time has never bothered me much up until now, as I still boot into into 2008 and find it I use it quite often. What I wanted to do was see if I could reduce the boot time in 2008, and when analysing and comparing my two bootchart output from 2008 & 2009, its clear to see that during bootup, my 2008 installtion does a lot of unneccessary waiting, hence the longer boot time. I thinkered with the runlevels of the startup services, and have seen a huge improvement.

All distributions should work together to get a faster system boot. There are those few different Init replacements what works well in different situations but not on all.

The 2009 is good direction for faster boottime, but there is lots of job there.
But the reason might be the hardware and not the software.

Because it sounds little silly to want a same boot times as we had on C64 etc. Where the OS was burned with basic applications to the ROM chip. And there is coming same thing when the new RAM memory gets in production state so we can get the speed of ROM but work as normal RAM. So when we shutdown and reboot the computer, the data is always in memory and the normal diskdrives or SSD drives can be forgotten as system memory, but only for storing information itself.

Hi New one! Welcome to the group! How are we guys and gals? I'm just curious as to what the average memory footprint of other mandriva 2009 users out there. I've currently got a memory footprint of 700mb, running a lot of applets, xmms, pidgin, and firefox with 7 tabs opened. Just wondering if this is normal. Would be interesting to see and compare. :) Ciao for now.

In this time I workong/testing Mdv2009.1+KDE4.2. I use many (Konqueror, Amarok, Kmail, Akregator, oo.org-Writer) apllicatoions. Alls used some 1.1 GB of ram. Thie is kde4.2 but on LXDE the same apllications use 300-500 MB.

BTW: MDV 2009.1 alpha2 startup on 25 sec.

Nice to see that my memory footprint isn't freakishly high. KDE and gnome will always use more memory than LXDE imo. BTW, nice boot up time!
