HTML5 Audio & Video tags for Konqueror

Description:

Hello everybody! This group was created with the only purpose of getting the HTML5 audio & video tags on Konqueror browser.

HTML5 is the new standard that promotes the open web with lots of new things that give a chance to free software to get avoide of close, propietary or patented formats.

This chance has to be taken early other wise patented, closed or propietary formats could take over the web (i.e: silverlight, h264, ...) and free formats will stay one step back (like ogg vorbis and MP3).

If you want to watch ogg vorbis videos with a browser, just download firefox (>3.5). This are some sites that support the free open video tags: http://theorasea.org/ http://tinyvid.tv/

Thanks Firefox for adopting and promoting the free and open standars!

Sadly Konqueror doesn\'t support it natively.

I love Konqueror the browser, and HTML 5 support is definitely important. Konqueror has much bigger concerns however, in my view.

The reason for konq's existence as a browser is to allow better integration into KDE, the way I see it. Konq is not yet at a stage where it can really think about new innovations above and beyond Firefox.

However, if konq is to be successful, it has to offer the same functionality as FF, in addition to better KDE integration as far as I can see. This is because GNU/Linux users are web power users generally, how can konq expect to be used if it has no web dev tools, no add on collections, and none of the hundreds of extra features that FF offers?

Konq's integration benefits don't come close to outweighing its disadvantages compared to FF in my view. And this is not a surprise considering what a huge and successful FOSS project FF is. Despite the best will in the world, how can konq ever expect to keep up?

HTML 5 support is just another area where konq cannot match FF - its by no means the most important missing feature in my opinion, and its absence reflects the larger problems with the konqueror browser project.

I think you are right about the many thousand pluggins FF has that allows from begginers to hackers to do every thing they want, but I think for *normal* users konqueror is not so bad. As you said it has better integration in KDE and it's faster(webkit). It's just missing some features. Normal users want to be able to read e-mails, play games and watch videos and listen to the music.

I think konqueror first should aim to provide everything a normal user expect (video tags are one of them) and then go for more.

Power users could go to FF for the features they need and sadly now normal users too(until audio & video tags get into).

For me Konqueror works very well most of the time (I take out the firefox about once or twice a day when a site doesn't like Konqueror), but I really miss the video tag and theora playback.

We have the chance here to team of with FF and make a big difference on the web - and maybe see the day when youtube switches to ogg theora content.

I intend to play with the patch in the next days, and see if we can get
something reasonnably effective for hard freeze.
I consequently added this to the feature plan.
