Description:

The Absolute Fonts Archive created a page that will let you download many fonts one at a time, or for a fee you can download them all as a zip file.

Upon careful inspection of their site I found a multitude of corrupted font files. After removing all the corrupted files I was left with 6,760 fonts. I have chosen to turn them into a tarball and offer them as a free download.

Changelog:

Previously a perl script was available here for download, but as I am now hosting the fonts myself, it is no longer necessary.

If you are on a dial-up connection try using a program like kget to download them, in case there is a disconnect.

License:
All fonts available through the Absolute Fonts Archive (either directly or via the tarball) are freely redistributable.

Absolute Fonts Archive has neither licensed nor created any of the fonts on their site, but they do warn against commercial use of these fonts.

Seems like this is just a glorified advertisement link. Sort of like adware when you choose to go after fonts but you wind up at his distro.

But there is a link on his site to some other site for fonts.

The site that he links to below his is to a site designed to make money off the fonts. Even though the price is cheap it is still a money making scheme. These also have nothing to do with kde nor are they the concept of GPL, imho.

That's not true. The site offers a free download, but also offers a link to buy the fonts if you can't download a file that big. People do the same with .iso's of linux, for the cost and hassle of burning cd's. There's nothing wrong with making money off of GPL software...you're confusing 'free' as in open source with 'free' as in costing nothing. The truth is, it costs money to host a site, or burn a cd and mail it...

I agree completely. He is offering the fonts free as well as a "pay service" for a more convenient method of obtaining them. There is nothing wrong with that at all, many Linux vendors do the same. He isn't breaking the GPL as, just like Richard Stallman said, "Don't confuse free software with free beer". Free in the GPL sense of the word doesn't mean "without cost" it means "freedom from limitations".

Sorry if it sounds like I'm preaching to the converted or telling you all what you already know but I don't like people using flawed arguments to mock or bash other peoples work.

BTW- The fonts are great and are well worth downloading. Now my OpenOffice.org documents look less sparse and boring. Thanks.

Hi,

How do you install these fonts? Whenever I try to open the folder in Nautilus it crashes (lol), and when I did the following in terminal:
wolphin@ubuntu:~/Desktop$ sudo cp downloadFonts/ /usr/share/fonts/truetype
cp: omitting directory `downloadFonts/'

Why does this happen? Thanks,

type that, replacing the the 'folder from' and 'to' with your folders and remove the brackets.
