Description:

The Absolute Fonts Archive created a page that will let you download many fonts one at a time, or for a fee you can download them all as a zip file.

Upon careful inspection of their site I found a multitude of corrupted font files. After removing all the corrupted files I was left with 6,760 fonts. I have chosen to turn them into a tarball and offer them as a free download.

Changelog:

Previously a perl script was available here for download, but as I am now hosting the fonts myself, it is no longer necessary.

If you are on a dial-up connection try using a program like kget to download them, in case there is a disconnect.

License:
All fonts available through the Absolute Fonts Archive (either directly or via the tarball) are freely redistributable.

Absolute Fonts Archive has neither licensed nor created any of the fonts on their site, but they do warn against commercial use of these fonts.

 Interesting

Indeed, it is very hard to find free to use and good quality TrueType fonts.

Also, the above site may help you as well it helped me to install on my GNU/Linux system great fonts :

http://www.clipserver.de

For instance, this site have Bitstream fonts and other very good fonts :

Swiss 721
Dutch 801
Zurich ...

You can :
- download all the fonts of this site
- rename all of them with TrueType renamer. It is a windows app wich work under Wine. It permits to give understandable names of the fonts. It is available here http://web.ticino.com/Sagittarius/
- make a big archive (around 17 Mo)

for I'm afraid I can not redistribute such an archive due to some licence restriction :)

Great site. For KDE-3.2 users, just download the font, preview it in the font viewer, and just click install. You can install as a normal user or root. Extremely easy :) Thanks again for the site.

 trouble downloading

Anyone else having trouble downloading the fonts with Konqueror? It keeps opening the ttf files instead of asking to save them. And Choosing Locations|Save As doesn't work either. I have to cut and paste the URL onto a wget cmd line. Any help?

I don't have that problem with KDE 3.2, but maybe you could use their option to email it to yourself.

When this kind of thing happens I just wait for the adress of the file to show up in konquerors adress bar, select it, and drag it to kget.

 perl download script

 by spoon on: Jan 11 2004

I refuse to click on each font, so I created a perl script to screen scrape and download.

http://spoonware.org/getit.pl.script

I put the ".perl" extension on due to the webserver wanting to run anything ".pl" Just make a directory, copy file there, make a "font" directory in that directory and run.

Enjoy

I'm new to linux and Perl, when I launch your script I receive the message:
Can't locate LWP/UserAgent.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0/i486-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/i486-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl .) at ./getit.perl line 3.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at ./getit.perl line 3.

Can You say to me what I hae to do..
Thank you very much.

You must be missing the perl-libwww-perl library.

Hello,

I am actually using this script to download all the 6800+ fonts.

After a light correction on line 17
just removed the lt html code after
$line =~ m/

it works pretty well ;)

well, how exactly should i run this script or how do i have to change it? i've run it with perl getit.perl, it compiles and nothing else happens. would be a great alternative to download every fonts by hand...

...and another small fix. line 43

"...ntdownload.cgi?server=216.40.241.209&di..."

I've removed the "amp;". Otherwise you will
get a lot of 404 messages into the ttf files ;)

BTW: A proxy can be added in line 8 as follows:
$ua->proxy(['http', 'ftp'], 'http://$proxy_ip:$proxy_port/');

The total size is over 300 MB, so a dial up connection would be extremely painful.

Hello. Great perl script but for dial-up users it's not that great since every time it is restarted it downloads all the files all over again. I've made this modification to the script so it will automatically skip any downloaded file.
if ( not ( -e "./font/$font.ttf" ) ) {

print "Downloading $font\n";

...

close( FP );

}

else {

print "$font already downloaded. Skipping...\n";

}

You could add a command line option to overwrite existing files (for newer versions) if you are really interested. Have fun!

Its' all a bunch of tree-hugging hippie crap!
