Description:

This time, while I was taking a look into the code of Archiplex, Shiki-Colors and Cleanlook, I had an idea to create a new set of themes. It took me nearly a week to come up with this result. Definitely, ClearGlow, among the themes I already created so far, is the one whose whole concept was thoroughly thought and reflected upon the most before I decided to release it.

First I wanted to reproduce a bit of the look of my Glow suite, especially on the buttons, but then the concept evolved and I started introducing some other ideas. Considering this theme is based only in the Clearlooks and Murrine engines, I came up with the name ClearGlow.

I was thinking of using the Murrine SVN engine first, but considering that in previous themes I had many adverse reactions from some of my users who found the installation of new engines was too much of a difficult process, I decided to postpone the adoption of Murrine SVN, at least for a while.

The only bugs I was able to found so far came from the Mozzila apps, namingly: the Add Bookmark Dialog from Firefox 3; and the titles of some sections of the Preferences dialog on Thunderbird. These widgets are using the menu background color along with the text color from the lighter widgets. In other words, it's dark text over a dark background. It's still readable, but not optimal. If you find any other bugs or if you know of a solution for the already pointed out problems, please let me know.

While I was taking these screenshots, I was using the Calibri font, bold weight, size 8. The icon theme is Eikon, a personal assemblage of various icons I found throughout the Web.

To get the most recent updates to Eikon, now on its second generation, please check this website: http://drop.io/fmrbpensador

The download package includes the GTK2 theme and a Metacity correspondent. I hope you enjoy ClearGlow. If you don't, please tell me what could be improved before you hit the "Voting Bad" button. Thank you in advance.

Changelog:

0.0.1 - First version of the theme released;
0.0.2 - Increased the highlight ratio of the progress bars; tried to redefine the right hue for each color variant; deleted from the packaged the less tested colors, at least for now;
0.0.3 - More compact menus; included index.theme files with the themes and created a separate folder for the Metacity theme (you might want to remove your old version of ClearGlow or back it up elsewhere).

 There is a very small problem

I'm not sure if it is an engine problem but I only get color orange regardless which one I pick. Is it using the default gnome engine? Or am I missing something.

besides this, I voted good! it is very nice.

I'm not sure of what is the problem, but over here the themes seem fine. As you might notice when looking into the gtkrc files, the selected background colors are indeed different. That said, I do know sometimes themes built in similar engines might keep the colors of the previous theme after a change. Just a wild guess, but is there any "revert colors" button available to be clicked, on the GNOME Appearance dialog?

Are you sure you hit the Defaults button under "Colors"? If you have a custom color set on, using one of these won't matter because it will use your color set. If you select "Defaults" it will use the defaults for whatever the theme is (even when you change the theme).

I love the theme, though it does have a few quirks that I'd like to see fixed (or I'll end up doing it myself XD).

I'm using my own green color to match a theme I've set up specially for the new school year (my school's colors, of course), and it looks great. I like the dark menu bars as I was using a dark theme before this (of my own design) and so it's definitely helping the transition back to the light side of the force.

Great work so far!

It would be both helpful and constructive if you specified which quirks did you catch on the theme.

Thanks for the message, and I'm glad that you're enjoying ClearGlow so far.

First off, I'm not sure if the style for the scrollbars goes well with everything else. Second, I just had some personal problems with the sliders. Both are things I can screw around with myself to get how I like, so no pressure on you ;)

Thanks for answering. I would like to hear you further on the scrollbars, if possible. What would be a good alternative to their current look, in your point of view? I'm studying that precise issue right now.

i don't like the scrollbars tho; and i'd change the menu background to a lighter color, that's actually the way i have it on my computer; it's less visually demmanding. All in all, is a great piece of work

Thanks for your support to ClearGlow! I'm glad you enjoy it.

As for the details you didn't like that much, I repeat the same question I did to the previous poster. I'm interested in hearing you concerning what would be a good alternative to the current scrollbars, in your opinion. I'd like to keep them dark gray as they are (though that can be changed too), but there are many other parameters, like texture, length, width, etc. Just let me know, if possible. Thanks in advance.

 Almost perfect

I really like this and I congratulate you on making a suburb theme.
That said, I found a little problem with the xfce4 panel. When adding or moving applets, the colours change and any tasks in the panel will go white. This may be unavoidable, but I thought I should mention it.
There is also the problem of the clock not showing up clearly. It is almost the same colour as the panel. This is the thing I really want to fix, any ideas?
I would also like to know where I can get the theme you used in your screenshots. Is it something you made or can it be found somewhere? If you made it, could you release it?

Fixed the clock problem. Replaced the regular xfce clock with the xfce4-datetime-plugin which is a better clock applet.

Noticed something strange happen to Synaptic: the theme does not apply to it. Is this a sudo thing? I will have a go at fixing this.

Hello there! Thanks for the message and for the support.
I will take a look in Xfce. Considering I always use Orage in my Xfce sessions, I wasn't aware of that bug. Thanks for pointing that out.

Concerning Synaptic, the answer is yes, it has to do with super-user applications. The programs you use with sudo don't follow the themes you have installed on your home folder. Not by default. You can do one of two things:

- Or you install all your themes under /usr/share/themes, which is a pain in the neck to say the least;
- Or you create a symlink (that is, a shortcut) to your ~/.themes folder inside of the /root folder, which is what I did in my PC.

Let me know if you need any further help.

Oh, and by the way, which theme were you talking about? The icon set? As I already specified in ClearGlow's description, it's a personal collection of icons I found in many sources around the Web, called Eikon. In the past, I already uploaded the icon to, say, file hosts like MediaFire and published the link in the comment box of my previous themes. Since the last time I did it, though, I tried to change and improve the icons and the symlinks between them, so I didn't upload that recent version anywhere yet. I will, though, if anyone wants it, even if it's not really "perfect".

This glow series has been my favorite as of late. I even like the scroll bars.
I don't think they are too dark, it provides some balance with the toolbar and metacity. If you brighten up the highlight on the scrollbar, it will just look like a bisected box and you lose the glossy effect. If you lighten the whole thing up, you're basically introducing another color. Granted, that lighter gray may exist in the gradients... but I still think it would unbalance the overall look. Just my two cents, and it's not worth much more than that!

Your work with the Aurora engine has been some of the best I've seen, but you've really found something nice with this current murrine/clearlooks effort.

As for the icons... omg, post a link already! Your version of "not really perfect" is still better than most!

now all we need is an emerald theme.. i find emerald to be much better than metacity decorations.

and good to see the eikon theme has progressed so much from when i last saw it.

i got just one question why does your calibri looks soo good where as mine renders like crap. every other font i use works awesome EXcept for calibri! it really pisses me off since it is indeed a very beautiful font.

I truly believe this tip I found last year on the UbuntuForums hasn't been spread around enough. It worked wonderfully in my case. This is my current configuration: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2944534&postcount=4

It was originally a tip to improve the way fonts look on OpenOffice, but, even now that that question seems to be solved, the above link is still very helpful. In the end, font rendering is a matter of personal taste, but give it a try, if you wish.
