Description:

It is time to give a modern and professional look to our desktop! The new theme makes more clever use of orange (not over-use it) and is mainly color-neutral. It is designed for Ubuntu in mind but can be used in other distros that may bear warm colors.

Installation: (requires pixbuf theme engine)
Very simple. Just double click the file newwave-(xxx).gtp where (xxx) is the version number e.g. 050. Note that if you have previous version of the theme in your home folder you need to remove it first. You may need to log out then log in to make all changes appear (e.g. handlers, lines). For more information on how to fix Firefox's menubar text and how to use the theme in root programs see the README file.

Extras:
The package also contains:
- New Wave Configurator (GUI),
- Emerald themes,
- Compiz-fusion settings,
- Second theme with dark menus,
- Firefox skin,
- Some metacity tweaks.
- Time applet tips.
Theme for xfwm4 (Xubuntu) can be downloaded in the Download section of this page.

 Firefox

Hi Anton,

Have you tried a Firefox nightly at all? (Not 3.5, but the nightly builds of the version after) I help with Firefox's GTK backend and have been doing work to try and improve your theme with it. A lot of issues are gone and I was wondering if you could look at it yourself and tell me of any other issues I may have missed.

I'm sorry about the problems Firefox has given you, but I hope you don't switch to dark menus as I'm not a fan of those :-)

 Gnome Color Chooser

Hi!! Great work, I really love your theme!
But...I would like to make my own modifications (I usually do that with every theme) with gnome color chooser, like set the compact profile for my netbook...but with this theme gnome color chooser does not work...Why? It's very important for me to reduce all the fonts and to add a little bit of personal look...

Thanks!

You cannot change the colours of the theme except of the basic ones: background, text, and textbox background colour. As far as the minimal theme I am working on this but don't expect it soon because I have a lot of more important work these days. You could try to modify the gtkrc but it is a bit complicated.

Hi there,

allow me to follow up on this one. Could you just give me a hint which value to change for the background of the application menu and right click menus?

I just love your theme as it is. The only thing I'd like to change is the color of the menus but I don't know which parameter to edit in the gtkrc...

Would be much appreciated!

ps: I could use the Darker Menus version but I don't like that one so much!

Regards
Matt

Open up the gtkrc file and press Ctrl+K and start typing 'Menu System' then find the style named *-menu, *-menuitem and change the bg[NORMAL] color.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I fiddled around with the gtkrc and managed to get where I wanted to get...

Now there's just one more thing. In Nautilus menu items that are not available (is that PRELIGHT?) appear in grey shaded with white. That doesn't look nice and is barely legible.

(see two topmost items on this screenshot http://wackawacka.com/menu_naut.png

How do I get Nautilus to draw up its menus like Firefox already does on the very same system...

(see this screenshot http://wackawacka.com/menu_ff.png)

Any hints are warmly welcomed :-)

Cheers
Matt

Well that items are in state INSENSITIVE and cannot be themed because you have only the option to change the main color but the etched in shadow cannot be modified. That is one of the reasons why New Wave has light menus by default. You could do nothing but to change that primary color or use another engine to draw the menuitems like mist.

but why do the menus look alright in Firefox? Isn't there way to transfer that look to the other apps as well?

... well - no because FF is the strange bird here and it has it's own rendering that is not that good in all the cases.

 Murrine Engine Port

by lightrush on: Jul 14 2009

Hi Anton,

The theme is really well balanced and good looking. It is a bit sluggish because of the pixbuf engine though. Especially on slower machines (laptops in powersave mode, netbooks) it can be noticably slower than Shiki, Human and other Murrine based themes.

Do you intend to port the theme to Murrine Engine and is it even possible without sacrificing too much elegance?

Thank you for the comment.

I think that beauty has it's price and in the case of New Wave it's the more resources it requires. I will not port the theme to any other engine because I have no time and much of the beauty of the theme will be lost in the transition.

I can see that Shiki is the closest match you can find that is faster. With some customization you will be able to get it quite close but you will not be able to create the scrollbars, and the buttons just as you can see them in New Wave

Interesting mockup!

I think this is hard to achieve with the pixbuf engine but I can think of one way we could get something similar. I will experiment with it and contact you when I have a working solution ;) (right now I'm away from home and I'll be back in September so expect it then)

That's a fantastic upgrade. New Wave is near perfection in my opinion now. Congratulations Dilomo ! The entire Ubuntu comunity is greatful for you work.

Question: Are you the same person that's working on NewWave icons ?

PS: The configurator works just fine for me!

Thank you :)

If by NewWave icons you mean the old Elementary_Ubuntu icon set yes I worked on them along with Sebastien that now makes icons for Breathe. If no can you please send me a link to those icons because I'll be very interested to see them.

I'm also happy that the Configurator works because I did not tested with other users much before I include it in the pack. Maybe a debian package would be better though so that you can access it faster? What do you think?

Yeah, i mean the Elementary_Ubuntu icon set. Are they still in development?

Dilomo i think that a PPA with Debian Package would be great. With just one click, would be possible to install the latest version of NewWave, NewWave Dark, NewWave Icons (maybe), NewWave Firefox Theme, GDM and Configuration Menu Icon on APPLICATIONS >> ACESSORIES. What do you think ? Well, i would be the first to download it.

The Icon theme is not in development for a very long time because the base Elementary icons we used were very slow and we decided to wait the icons to be polished enough so that we could have fast and beautiful iconset.

This package management sounds great indeed. Right now I can promise to learn how to make them and create one for the Configurator as a start. It will be available in the Accessories menu ;)
