Description:

Shiki-Colors mixes the elegance of a dark theme with the usability of a light theme, resulting in a hybrid theme. Shiki is designed to be fast and stable.

There is a Clearlooks version for out-of-the-box compatibility with most distros and a Murrine version for eyecandy and speed.

There are 7 color variations (Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Red, Chocolate, Pink). A matching set of Icons, Wallpapers and GDM themes can also be downloaded separately from gnome-look or at the gnome-colors project page.

You can edit the theme's source (the gtkrc files) for further customization, which is all too easy due to the included instructions.

Must read or clowns will eat you:
* The Murrine version will only work with Murrine 0.90.3 or newer. Yes, you will need to upgrade unless you're using Ubuntu Jaunty.

* The borders are very thin, and titlebars/menubars are unified because of "LOL, ELEGANCE". If you have any difficulty resizing windows, try the included alternate metacity with thicker borders.

* In Ubuntu, for themes (installed through appearance preferences) to be able to theme applications in admin mode, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root && sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

Fedora users can get an installable package of Murrine 0.90.3 (x86) here until is not available in release section:

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install shiki-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* To fix minor Firefox 3 bugs in Shiki-Colors, install the Stylish add-on and go here (or install the included userChrome.css file following the instructions in README):

... but shiki colors is one of the best themes and still improving.
It gives xubuntu the serious appearance it deserves. Voted up, of course.

I used shiki for a while last year, changed themes for a while and then finally came back. But I seem to recall shiki having a colored border at the top of active tabs. Was that actually true, or am I losing my mind? If I'm not, is it possible to get that back?

Also a suggestion for improvement. I'm not a big fan of the background color of the active window on the gnome task bar.Light grey with white font isn't terribly readable. Why not go with something like how Elegant Brit does things, with maybe a slightly lighter background and a border color at the top of the button? That'd fit more with shiki anyway I think.

Despite my two complaints, it's still without a doubt one of the best themes out there!

The stripe is still there!

The new metacity has a more traditional and usable design, but I always include a "Striped" variation so that everyone is happy and to pay homage to the original design.

As for the active window list button, I've never really had any readability issues with it. The font/background color was designed to have a similar contrast to the rest of the dark items (near-black background with light gray text as opposed to dark gray with white text). Both cases have a similar contrast between background and text, yet are similar enough to be consistent.

As for a colored stripe - I'd love to do something like that, but it can only be done with pixmaps, not with an engine. The theme is rendered with GTK engines only to keep the best possible performance, consistency, and allow for user customization. Having a stripe there may also have positioning issues, so the user may have to set larger panels, etc.

I forgot to mention that to get the Striped look, you have to select it in Appearance Preferences as "Window Border".

I'm not talking about the stripe on the top of windows, but on the top of tabs. That's GTK, not metacity, no?

Oh yes, that's GTK. Just use the "Clearlooks" version, Murrine does not support striped tabs.

Hi,

First of all, kudos on such a great theme. I've been using shiki for a while now (icons and gtk theme) and I'm always amazed at how complete it is.

Recently I was introduced to the New Wave theme and it has been my main theme for a few months now. I think both themes are great in their own ways but one thing I really got used to in New Wave is the white menu background (as when you click on places, system, applications etc.)

I think it's great because you have the benefits of a dark theme but also can have white menus which I find more elegant and subtle. Is there a way to implement that in the shiki suite of themes?

Can't really do that without breaking Firefox (at least more than the current design does).

The main issue is that Firefox uses menu-item text colors for MenuBar text, instead of MenuBar text colors, which is why NewWave has unreadable menu bars.

To summarize, you can have light menubar with light menus or dark menubars with dark menus - but not dark menubars with light menus and viceversa.

If this gets fixed in Firefox, I'd give it a try.

I always thought the nearly unreadable text in new wave was a problem with the theme itself when handling firefox and not vice versa. I had also forgotten of that since I've been using the Persona Firefox extension which uses skins on FF to create different "themes". With that the menu always looks the same no matter what theme I choose. I'm using the Abstract Black skin right now which looks nice...you should try it!

The only two things I'd change are: 1. the spelling of 'colour' ;) and 2. wave a magic wand and make more applications support resizing in the bottom-right corner, so themes with thin borders -- such as Shiki -- would be more usable.

Oh well, neither of these things are show-stoppers (although a Shiki variation could easily be used as the default in Ubuntu if it weren't for 2.)

Regarding (1.), the spelling is correct! Both "color" and "colour" are acceptable depending on where you're from. I was taught American English, so "color" is the proper spelling for me, although (UK) users would disagree.

Regarding (2.), try the included "Easy" metacity. It has thicker borders for easy resizing. As for applications having the "grip" on the bottom right corner, that has nothing to do with any theme, only with the applications themselves!

I try out loads of themes all the time, but always end up back on Shiki! So complete and trouble free. Loving the new Shiki-Dust theme. Thanks for your PPA and a wonderful, much improved look for Ubuntu. :)
