Description:

Shiki-Colors mixes the elegance of a dark theme with the usability of a light theme, resulting in a hybrid theme. Shiki is designed to be fast and stable.

There is a Clearlooks version for out-of-the-box compatibility with most distros and a Murrine version for eyecandy and speed.

There are 7 color variations (Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Red, Chocolate, Pink). A matching set of Icons, Wallpapers and GDM themes can also be downloaded separately from gnome-look or at the gnome-colors project page.

You can edit the theme's source (the gtkrc files) for further customization, which is all too easy due to the included instructions.

Must read or clowns will eat you:
* The Murrine version will only work with Murrine 0.90.3 or newer. Yes, you will need to upgrade unless you're using Ubuntu Jaunty.

* The borders are very thin, and titlebars/menubars are unified because of "LOL, ELEGANCE". If you have any difficulty resizing windows, try the included alternate metacity with thicker borders.

* In Ubuntu, for themes (installed through appearance preferences) to be able to theme applications in admin mode, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root && sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

Fedora users can get an installable package of Murrine 0.90.3 (x86) here until is not available in release section:
http://files.getdropbox.com/u/1529612/gtk-murrine-engine-0.90.3-1.fc12.i586.rpm

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install shiki-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* To fix minor Firefox 3 bugs in Shiki-Colors, install the Stylish add-on and go here (or install the included userChrome.css file following the instructions in README):
http://userstyles.org/styles/10822

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

Changelog:

4.6 (2009-09-25)
* Add support for Chromium's GTK theming.

4.5 (2009-08-03)
* Update Green, Pink, Orange and Red palettes for better contrast.
* Fix a minor Firefox urlbar color issue in green/orange variations.

4.4 (2009-07-14)
* Add new Pink (Illustrious) color variation.
* Add support for gdm-user-switch applet in Karmic.
* Fix panel matching in Dust-Murrine variant.
* Remove spaces in metacity names for easier RPM packaging. You might have to
remove the old metacity folders or run make uninstall from a previous version.

Is there already an ETA for updates?

I suggest the use of the latest Nodoka on the next version. (See http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Nodoka+Dust+?content=98574 )

Could you upload the .msstyle that helps blend wine applications with shiki to this gnome-look page so that those of us who are interested could use it?

Thank you very much! :)

There is no shiki msstyle for wine. You can, however assign a similar color scheme.. For example, in the brave version, open /.wine/user.reg in a text editor and replace "Control Panel\\Colors" with:

[Control Panel\\Colors] 1230873761
"ActiveBorder"="216 216 216"
"ActiveTitle"="114 159 207"
"AppWorkspace"="108 108 108"
"Background"="114 159 207"
"ButtonAlternateFace"="161 161 161"
"ButtonDkShadow"="139 139 139"
"ButtonFace"="216 216 216"
"ButtonHilight"="235 235 235"
"ButtonLight"="225 225 225"
"ButtonShadow"="139 139 139"
"ButtonText"="0 0 0"
"GradientActiveTitle"="114 159 207"
"GradientInActiveTitle"="216 216 216"
"GrayText"="147 147 147"
"Hilight"="114 159 207"
"HilightText"="255 255 255"
"HotTrackingColor"="114 159 207"
"InActiveBorder"="212 208 200"
"InActiveTitle"="216 216 216"
"InActiveTitleText"="105 105 105"
"InfoText"="0 0 0"
"InfoWindow"="245 245 181"
"Menu"="60 60 60"

"MenuHilight"="94 140 192"
"MenuText"="230 230 230"

There's no real ETA for updates, I just change things every once in a while as the Murrine engine progresses and allows me to do so.

The clearlooks version was updated about a month ago, and this added gradient panels that will stretch instead of tiling. Since there's not much I can change to this version, it should be pretty much complete.

The murrine version has the same updates and I tweaked it a bit for newer murrine revisions about a week ago. It's also pretty complete, and the only future changes will be in order to keep compatibility with later revisions of the murrine engine.

It's all pretty much bug-free with the exception of certain non-gtk apps such as thunderbird and firefox, but there is nothing I can do about this.

 Bold panel text

Hey perfectska04,

Do you think its worth setting the panel clock (usually at the top right part of the screen) to display a bold font ?? (just like on the "Applications Places System" applet)

I have put in "widget "*Panel*Clock*" style "bold-panel-menu" " in the gtkrc file and it looks better and more unified if the top panel has bold text on both sides.

Thanks once again for your excellent themes and congratulations on making a theme worthy of deploying as a default distribution theme. (I just hope Canonical has their head screwed on and considers this theme as the default to Karmic Koala)

I've played around with that idea, but having the clock applet's font bold creates a few visual inconsistencies, since all other applets have regular font weight.

For now, I think the current approach is best, since it gives the main menu focus and allows the clock applet to be placed anywhere.

 MurrineSVN issue

 by bnampel on: Mar 8 2009

I first noticed this issue after upgrading to the latest MurrineSVN package you provide. Tabs and buttons with focus have this blue rectangle in them. It seems out of place to me. I don't recall what the old behavior was, but I'd like it back. I've mucked around in the gtkrc file, but can't find this particular setting. Screenshot attached for clarity.

It's not an issue. Those are the focus selection rings that the murrine engine now uses. The only way to get rid of them, is to use an older revision of the murrine engine, or talk to the murrine developer about improving these focus rings.

I was afraid of that. Thanks for responding. Any chance you have the previous MurrineSVN revision that you uploaded around the time of Shiki-Colors v2.5?

I don't think I have any older packages around. Perhaps if you browse the launchpad ppa archives there's bound to be a few.

 New Usplash

I'm working on a new Usplash theme for GNOME-Colors. I know this is a bit unrelated, but I want a little user input before I spend a million hours coding it (because usplash is hell).

Thoughts?

It's very nice but I find the font too cartooney. It makes the feel the computer informal. Maybe, it's better to use a more conventional font. It would also be nice if the hostname would be displayed.

 Hybrid theme?

 by Antioch on: Mar 17 2009

Score 50%

Perhaps I missed this among the plethora of great *-colors themes - but it would be nice to have a "half-way shiki" theme. By that I mean, the title bar remains dark as in shiki, but the "File/Edit/View/etc" "bar" is grey. A kind of Murrine/Shiki-Colors hybrid.

I have a feeling I've seen this somewhere, but a quick search revealed nothing.

You can get the same result by deleting the settings from the menubar section. However, due to the dark menu/menu-items, firefox might act up. The easiest way to accomplish what you want would be to grab clearlooks-colors and enable dark panels in the panelrc file. Then again, the Shiki metacity is not really designed for themes with light menubars, so a new metacity would be needed if you want the best possible result.

In other words, you probably want to download the "Blended" metacity and use clearlooks-colors/murrine-colors with dark panels, as fitting Shiki-colors for this setup would be quite tricky.
