Description:

Shiki-Colors mixes the elegance of a dark theme with the usability of a light theme, resulting in a hybrid theme. Shiki is designed to be fast and stable.

There is a Clearlooks version for out-of-the-box compatibility with most distros and a Murrine version for eyecandy and speed.

There are 7 color variations (Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Red, Chocolate, Pink). A matching set of Icons, Wallpapers and GDM themes can also be downloaded separately from gnome-look or at the gnome-colors project page.

You can edit the theme's source (the gtkrc files) for further customization, which is all too easy due to the included instructions.

Must read or clowns will eat you:
* The Murrine version will only work with Murrine 0.90.3 or newer. Yes, you will need to upgrade unless you're using Ubuntu Jaunty.

* The borders are very thin, and titlebars/menubars are unified because of "LOL, ELEGANCE". If you have any difficulty resizing windows, try the included alternate metacity with thicker borders.

* In Ubuntu, for themes (installed through appearance preferences) to be able to theme applications in admin mode, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root && sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

Fedora users can get an installable package of Murrine 0.90.3 (x86) here until is not available in release section:

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install shiki-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* To fix minor Firefox 3 bugs in Shiki-Colors, install the Stylish add-on and go here (or install the included userChrome.css file following the instructions in README):

Please add a window border for XFWM.

I know that I could use emerald, but it would be nice to have a native border.

Anyway, thanks a bunch for the nice themes that you provide.

I've been meaning to add one for the longest time, but I just really don't know how to make one. I'll read some xfwm guides and tes things around, but I can't really promise anything anytime soon.

Yes, but that one is based on a very old version of the Shiki metacity. It doesn't have all the new buttons or gradients I've added since.

Hover over my user avatar and click on "other contents". There, you should find anything you're missing.

There is a set of Usplashes, but they're a bit outdated and won't work with Intrepid unless you compile them from source.

Hi,

I've noticed some annyoing bug when using your great compilation:

Everytime when I am a little bit above or under the close "x" icon in the metacity panel, the mouse pointer suddenly changes into a cornerlike icon, that you normally see, when your mouse icon is placed in a corner of any window.

In this position I can resize the window, as if my mouse pointer was in a corner of a window, but it isn't, it's just a little bit above or under the "x" icon. This happens in every corner of any window.

I've installed the default Ubuntu Theme (Human) and noticed the same behaviour of this cornerlike icon appearing in the lower right und left corners. It's definitely not occuring in the upper corners. This is quite useful, but it's annoying to have it in the upper corners. You are using the upper corners of a window very frequently, especially the upper rigt one. So the appearing of the cornerlike icon is very annoying and irritating, due to the frequent use of the area, where this bug appears.

I'm using Intrepid Ibex with a disabled Compiz.


Is it possible with this theme to have the icon of the window in the left upper corner instead of the circle icon?


Is it possible to remove the small white boarder around the video area in the Totem Player?

Maybe change the color into black or a color that is matching the metacity panel for a smoother experience.

I've got to go to class soon, so I'll try to make it short.

First, the corner-like mouse icon you see appears only when you hover the right edge of the metacity's colored stripe.
Since the other borders of the theme are very thin (only 1px), having the ability to do a diagonal resize easily at the top is a way to get around those metacity limitations.

Secondly - about totem. This is not an issue with the theme itself, it is totem itself which is using a border around the video. It just seems more noticeable when using Shiki, due to the dark menubar. If this border still bothers you, you can try using a theme that is fully dark - rather than a hybrid theme like Shiki. Otherwise, you could also switch to a better media player, such as Gnome-Mplayer.

And thirdly, I included an alternate version of the metacity with thicker borders and the window icon instead of the circle. Just open up the appearance preferences and select "Shiki-Colors Easy Metacity".

I think you misunderstood the mouse behaviour I ment. I've made a picture for clarification:

The green continuous lines are those where my mouse pointer turns into the cornerlike icon. This behaviour is great and practical, nothing to change here. The continuous red lines show where my mouse pointer turns cornerlike and exatly this is not necessary and annoying to me. The Human Theme (default in Ubuntu) has for instance the same mouse behaviour, but without the RED LINES. So my suggestion is to remove the area, which causes the mousepointer to change into the cornerlike icon, represented by the red lines, so that the mousepointer won't change into a cornerlike...


I will use VLC instead of Totem then.


Is there a metacity theme with the icon in the left upper corner and the same thin boarders as the shiki original theme has? Your answer implies that you can only have the window icon with a thicker boarders version.

Sorry, I think I misunderstood then. However, I can't reproduce it, though. In all my computers (some running compiz and some not) the diagonal arrow appears only in the green outlines you made. Regardless of where I hover, it doesn't appear in the red section. Perhaps there's some additional configuration or change you've made to elicit this behavior?

Regarding the easy metacity, you can easily change the thickness to your preference. Just open the metacity-theme-1.xml in its folder with gedit, and at the top of the document, change the values for "left_width" "right width" and bottom_height" from 3 to 1, or whatever size you want the borders to be. 1 is the setting for the normal metacity, so just use 1 if you want that look.

That's strange you can't reproduce it. I've never tweaked something and the like. Just used the default Ubuntu theme with the "inverted" Metacity theme before I found your theme...


You mention the following in the description:

-The following tweaks are recommended when using the included Metacities (press ALT + F2 and then input each command):
gconftool-2 --type float --set /apps/gwd/metacity_theme_opacity 1

gconftool-2 --type float --set /apps/compiz/plugins/decoration/allscreens/options/shadow_opacity 0.85

gconftool-2 --type float --set /apps/compiz/plugins/decoration/allscreens/options/shadow_radius 12

Should I try to apply your advice even without using Compiz?


sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root
sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

That's the only tweak I did.


I've installed Icons, GTK, Metacity and GDM via your script and the other time manually, with no difference in mouse behaviour.

Where are your files regarding this theme more up to date, here on gnome-look or on your google code site?


Any suggestions where I can start to search for a solution to solve my current mouse behaviour?

I just tested in an old laptop without compiz and it did show up there. Perhaps it's a metacity issue? I can't really think of anything else, since the original base code for the metacity is pretty much clearlooks/unity which are very conservative and well supported metacity themes.

By the way, what do you mean about the borders? they're only 1px thick.

If you meant the borders for the easy version - well, they're thick precisely because it's an alternate version made for easy resizing. If it didn't have thicker borders, there'd be no point in including it at all. You can always make its borders less thicks by following the instructions I posted earlier.

I can't change the size of the titlebar. If I make it smaller, windows without menubars will look odd and out of place. It used to be a lot smaller when I first released the theme, but dozens of people requested the current titlebar size.

Only one problem is Flock has white text. Any idea how this vould be fixed? Here's a screenshot. I know it's not a major issue but It'd be nice for it to be fixed eventually. ^_^ http://i35.tinypic.com/2ltmr81.png

The theme will always use light menu text, since it assumes all GTK applications will inherit the theme's colors appropriately. Since Flock uses a theme for itself rather than following the GTK standards, I imagine the only way to fix it is to modify Flock's theme, use a different theme, or some sort of CSS that will force it to use dark menubars.
