Description:

somehow i made friends with the ubuntulooks engine.

i saw this theme on a few displays where it turned out completely white, red or blue (never green though) due to monitor settings, in that case, or if you just feel like it, change the colors of the theme in gnome-appearance-settings!
in the archive there is a readme file with installation instructions.
don't hesitate to leave a comment!

the theme consists of:
-gtk-theme: normal-panel
-gtk-theme: inverted-panel
-window-borders: metacity
-window-borders: xfwm4
-window-borders: emerald
-panel backgrounds
-ubuntu menu and logoff icon
-thumbnail frame
-wallpapers

-so far i only built an emerald theme, maybe i will be able to write a metacity theme some time soon...
-credits for the wallpaper do not go to me, it is a modified version of the "infinity" wallpaper from fedora.

-odd and even row colors in lists are now different.
-if you set the gtk:bg color of the theme darker, the gradient start color of the metacity theme will at some point follow: darker themes look better now.

-changed metacity/emerald glyphs to more conventional ones
-added an "ubuntu" emerald theme because unlike metacity emerald does not pick up the gtk color if you change it
-added a gtk theme with inverted panel colors
-added a few panels for either black or white text on it
-changed the wallpaper, it is now quite far from fedora infinity

-gtk: changed nautilus-extra-view-widget color
-gtk: fixed a bug that was visible in gedit and eog message area
-gtk: rearranged and renamed the themes, set black as default cursor
-metacity: title is now "etched in"
-metacity: glyphs look more plastic now, i had the gnome logo on the toolbar in mind. what do you think of them?
-emerald: tossed the ubuntu emerald theme, you can easily change the colors yourself in emerald
-panel images are new
-changed wallpaper, added heron wallpaper (i know, it's a little late for a heron)
-added the readme file

-added xfwm4 theme for that desktop environment with the cute black mouse
-metacity: utility and modal_dialog windows have no icon
-emerald: contains additional buttons i made for xfwm4, but not enabled

-gtk: nautilus sidebar separator is now only 1px
-gtk: changed panel normal button color (not directly visible, but affects border of active button)
-gtk: fixed cpufreq applet text color
-gtk: changed highlight color (i had a monochrome LCD in mind)
-metacity: changed corner radius (did not know you can do that until recently!)
-metacity: additional buttons (see README) and increased drow shadow of buttons
-metacity: modal dialog windows have no more title
-xfwm4: changed corner radius
-emerald: changed corner radius + additional buttons
-icons: switched from tango to mist as default icons

It would be nice to have it Xfce-ified!

I don't really like how it looks on my system, the tobacco selection highlights interfere with an otherwise interesting theme.

Also due to it having a metacity theme, I was wondering if I could put in my plus one vote for an xfwm4 theme for intuition.

I really like the ethic of the theme, and the artistic clarity of it.

as to the highlight color: there seems to be no solution for using your own gtk color scheme in xfce, i only found this unanswered post:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=632575
you could still edit the gtkrc file itself, the gtk color scheme is in the first line: selected_bg_color:#CCC189

as to the xfwm4 theme: ~1 week :-)

i have been using xfce for a while myself, sometimes its hard because everything is explained and fixed for gnome.

xfwm4 is done! it was my first one. funny how these window decorators are different to theme, at first glance i had no idea where to start, there are 120 pixmaps in an xfwm4 theme. however it is identical with the metacity theme, apart from the additional buttons you can have in xfce. hope you like it.

In the metacity theme, the mini icon in the titlebar looks odd in windows without titles. (It floats in the middle of the titlebar.)

Could the theme's xml file be edited to place the icon on the left side or remove it completely?

both is possible but not a better option to me: if no icon at all, there is some kind of inconsistency, because in the window list there is also the icon, if left, it is floating alone too.

however i will see if there is another possibility to exploit: in metacity you can set different styles for different window types (such as toolwindow, dialog, etc). i can't promise but i'll try it out.

it worked. only there remains a strange bug in dialog windows in nautilus: the icon disappears after hovering the closebutton, although it should not be there in the first place now that i made it so. this is beyond my theme, because in other applications it is as supposed to be.

I'm running Hardy with Gnome 2.22.3 and utility/modal dialog windows still show an icon with intuition 1.6.

can you give me the name of the application or a screenshot? i know that nautilus modal dialogs behave strange (icon disappears after hovering the closebutton). anyway, there will be further change to the modal dialog window in the next update, fixing at least the weird nautilus thing.

which is active?

the ONLY problem with this theme in my eyes is that you cannot tell which window is the active one. The titles of each active and inactive windows are the same so how can you tell them apart?
It is better if you can tell which is focused. I dont know how this could be fixed because i tried transparency and making the text lighter on inactive windows didn't look that good, but I think I'd probably use this theme if it weren't for that. I really like the transparent panels that get out of your way. One thing though, with the ubuntulooks engine the buttons of the active window in the panel look kinda wierd because there is a frame around the button on a transparent background. it isn't this way for pretty much any other engine. Maybe if you used clearlooks or murrine just in the panel it would look better? Just a thought. Either way, i can tell you have a natural ability for the themeing because this theme really appeals to my senses. it's "intuitive" if you will :)

if you have compiz enabled you can activate that plugin that makes the whole inactive window darker. that is the best concept in my mind. i don't know the name of the plugin because my interface is german, but if you open compizconfig-settings-manager it is in the accessibility section.
i am not using compiz at the time, and although i am not missing any distinction between active and inactive window, i understand your concern. i once considered leaving away the metacity buttons of the inactive window completely, but that would be too radical. i don't really have a good idea here. you're right, making the text lighter doesn't look good, and transparency breaks the gradient.

about the buttons: the outline of the active button is determined by the gtk:bg of the normal button, and i already made that a little lighter than bg of the panel, for the reason you said.
only the wallpaper varies, and i tested it mostly with a wallpaper of #808080 (being kind of the average wallpaper) for the transparent panel. it's not perfect but the outline didn't look too heavy to me. i don't want to use another engine, clearlooks and murrine being the options here. clearlooks active buttons don't look inward and murrine i just can't stand.

compiz plugin is "ADD Helper" and yes that works well! thanks! As for murrine, I can understand hating the older versions of it, but the newer SVN versions are getting pretty good. Either way I think i'll see if I can make it to my liking by modifying the gtkrc. It already looks good though. The only real reason I noticed was because I have my window list on the panel on top without a bottom panel so the untransparent bottom part of the panel button was much more apparent to me.

I think I've found a bug in version 1.6 of both the inverted and normal themes.

When I change to the default xfce theme,logout and log back in .. everything's perfect. However, when I change to the intuition theme, logout and log back in, the volume manager and most other panel icons disappear (and can't be added).

Changing back to the default xfce theme, logging out and logging in fixes it.

i tried to reproduce what you described, but after logging out and back in again everything is still the way it is supposed to be.
there are two things i thought of you could try:

1) open the gtkrc file, scroll to the bottom and delete the panel segment (which works for gnome-panel, but, i thought, does not interfere with xfce panel).

2) try the human theme or another one that uses the ubuntulooks engine, and see if the bug is engine-related.
