28/10/2010 v1.6.0 . This update should have come six months ago, unfortunately at that time i had abandoned Gnome in favor of the more modern (and buggy as i was about to find out) KDE. Anyway, this is mainly a bug fix release, so many long standing problems should now be fixed.

Btw, there is a bug with the gtk-window-decorator that sometimes causes the Azel New menu button to be rendered incorrectly, i am aware of it but can't do much about it.

Description :
This theme looks best with the Faenza-Dark icon theme. It's also designed to work with or without the globalmenu hack (see instructions).

Instructions :

  • Extract the archive, go to the gtk folder and install Azel, Azel Original and Azel New through the theme manager.

  • If you prefer the gnome standard button placement use the Azel window border. If you prefer buttons on the left (as in the screenshot) use the Azel Original window border and go to the next step. The Azel New decorator works as well for both layouts.

  • If you have selected the Azel Original window border , open gconf-editor, go to apps->metacity-> general and change the button_layout to
    close,maximize,minimize:menu .

  • If you are using compiz , open gconf-editor, go to apps->gwd and set metacity_theme_opacity to 1 . Then, go to apps->compiz->plugins->decoration->allscreens->options
    and set shadow_opacity to 0.85 , shadow_radius to 8.5 , shadow_x_offset to 0 and shadow_y_offset to 4 .


  • If you prefer emerald to metacity/gtk-window-decorator , go to the emerald folder and install the themes . You can also look here http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=78145 for decorators that have the buttons on the right side.


  • If you are using globalmenu, go to your themes directory and browse inside Azel/gtk-2.0/. Open the file gtkrc and scroll down near the bottom till you find the line 'include "tweaks-no-globalmenu.rc"' (without the quotes). Comment out (put a # symbol in front of) that line, uncomment (remove the # from) the '#include "tweaks-globalmenu.rc" line and reload the theme.


  • If you prefer the old silver panel, go to your themes directory and browse inside Azel/gtk-2.0/. Open the file gtkrc and scroll down near the bottom till you find the line 'include "panelblack.rc"' (without the quotes). Comment out (put a # symbol in front of) that line, uncomment (remove the # from) the '#include "panel.rc"' line and reload the theme.


  • If you are using Ubuntu Karmic x64 and have problems with thunar and huge toolbars, use the included deb or follow the included instructions to compile a fixed version yourself.


  • If you are using firefox just use Midori :P . Just kidding ;) . Go to the firefox folder and into ff2 if you are using firefox2 or ff3 for firefox3. In case you are using the hidemenubar extension, there is also the Azel-no-menubar theme included.


  • If you are using Mplayer , extract the contents of the Azel-mplayer archive into ~/.mplayer/skins .

  • Text color on progressbars fixed.

  • Better progressbars in treeviews.

  • Firefox no longer needs a skin.

  • Chromium frame color fixed.

    First off, I wanna say that this theme is awsome. It's actually the first one that catches my eye in a while.

    Anyway, in your screenshot, I notice two things that I cannot do. (1) The top panel has an image as background, and it is also a little transparent. How do I do that?

    (2) Your Gnome menu icon is dark, but in the black-white 2 icons, it is white...did you change it or is it another theme?

    1) I haven't set an image as a background it's the standard panel pixmap of the theme. As for transparency , i use compiz-fusion : Open Compizconfig , goto general settings -> Opacity Settings , click add and enter class=panel and a value of 79.

    2) I've used gconf-editor to change the icon of the main menu applet to that of Galeon from the Oxygen refit icon theme. Get and install the Oxygen refit theme, open gconf-editor and goto apps->panel->objects . Look for an object with Main Menu as the tooltip , select use custom icon and enter the path of the icon in the custom_icon field .

    hi dude i just wanted to add something..could u do teh panel bar more uniform? i see diferent sets of colours on it...one darker from the rest..and could u do something about those bars that appears on the lougout dialog? thats really ugly :P keep up this excelent theme!!!

    The panel looks right only when the size is set to 24 pixels. Does your panelbar look like mine on the screenshots ?

    I don't see any bars on my logout screen, do you mean the buttons that pop up on mouse over (they look like all the other buttons in the rest of the theme)?

    no my bar does not look like urs..when i click on logout the dialog is full of bars like to one on the gnome panel...on after another...and not a unike one...another thing..how can i put the menu icons even more little? thanks for the reply ;)

    I can't replicate your problems , my panel is fine and the logout menu looks fine too. if you can post a screenshot with your problems it would help allot.

    Also try completely removing the theme redownload and reinstall it.

    As for the icon sizes, go to your .themes directory , browse into Azel/gtk-2.0 and open gtkrc with gedit. Go all the way down to the last line and you will see this :
    gtk-icon-sizes = "gtk-large-toolbar=24,24:panel-menu=24,24:gtk-menu=19,19"
    change panel-menu values for panel icons and gtk-menu values for menu icons.

    If you are using ubuntu you don't see the
    standard gnome logout menu, but a customized
    one, and I am aware of this problem in
    at least gentoo , pclos and foresight.

    PS. if you have a panel style with a bgpixmap
    for the panel and have something like this

    class "*Panel*" style "panel"

    then that is most probably the problem!

    Thanks man ! That's what i call a coinsidance, i was just looking at your Slickness panel code, allot of interesting stuff waiting to be found in there :).
    Btw , are you interested in mentaining my themes ? I will be away for about a year (military service) so i doubt i will be able to offer updates.

    yeah the slickness code should be fairly
    bugfree now.... the code is a mess atm when
    I haven't spent much time cleaning it up
    ,hope you can make some sense out of it :D.

    As for maintaining your themes I appreciate
    you askin, I really do, because they are
    clearly top-notch!

    However I have enough to do with my own
    themes and I wouldn't feel comfortable making
    any changes to your work whatsoever :)
    (I would only make it worse)

    I am working on a big update that will probably solve your problems (new panels are a big part of the update). In the mean time , please post a screenshot of your panel, it would help me to solve your problems faster.

    here it is..ive tryed something..when i change icons on gnome sometimes the panel goes right just like urs...im guessing there is some conflits on some .theme packages...

    As i've told you before, your panel height must be set to 24 pixels for the panel to look right. Just right click on the panel, select Properties, set size to 24 pixels. The next update will eliminate this kind of problems as the panels will be completely resizable.
