Description:

A dark (black & white) theme for gnome desktop.
Thanks to Gnome Fanatic for the name!

I just recieved mail being told this
theme is the default in PCLOS Gnome 2008 !

More info and download here: http://linuxgator.org/

suggestions very welcome!

PLS! tell me what you think!

!!!!IMPORTANT!!!!!

To install:
1.Download the file to your desktop
2.Right click the file and select extract here, then another archive pops up,do
the same for that.
3.open a terminal and run these commands:

first
sudo cp -r $HOME/Desktop/SlicknesS /usr/share/themes

second (this one fixes firefox, don't need this for ff3, only 2 This fix is made by user twrock, so if he wants me to delete it i will)
cp /usr/share/themes/SlicknesS/userChrome.css $HOME/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/chrome

4.Open the theme manager, you can now
see the SlicknesS theme as a theme,
when you click on it , it suggests
taners amazing wallpaper he made for this theme!!
click apply to apply the wallpaper!

the icon theme it suggests is this one:

http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/black-white+2+Style?content=72619

any problems with the install let me know!!!!

One REALLY HUGE thank you to artist Taner
for his fantastic wallpaper!

Changelog:

2.2.2 probably the last update, this should
fix the message of an engine "" not installed
I can't try it myself if it works (since I don't have
gnome installed) so if anyone would be kind
to let me know if it works, it would be kind :)
This will probably be my last fix as I'm not on
gnome anymore.

2.2.1 Fixed my previous F**kup. (at least I hope so)
(it's been tested on ubunut 7.10). If anyone still
has any kind of problem please be so kind and let me
know!

To read full changelog read changelog.txt in
the SlicknesS folder.

hmmm, firefox 3 shouldn't have a problem
with this theme, it should work fine
without the chrome file, try without
it and see if it works... I'm sorry I
cannot help you more since I have switched
over to kde and I don't have gnome installed
anymore.

A huge thank you for your very kind words
man!

I was just about to report this same bug as I just upgraded ff3...

It is shocked to know that Rob no longer uses gnome :(

I have (tried) to switch to kde several times in history, but cannot get used to it up to now...

I hope Rob say "I'll be back..."

 KDE

I'm sad to hear that you've switched to kde. I kinda hoped you would continue to work on this wonderful theme. IMO you make some of the very best themes for Gnome. Your work will be missed.

Actually I switched from KDE to Gnome recently - Slickness made Gnome look so GOOD I had to use it more. :-D

I still use some KDE apps though. Have you thought about porting your themes to KDE? I don't even know if it's possible, but it would be nice to have the same theme for KDE and Gnome. Consistency you know. :)

BTW: I have the same black on black bookmark text in FF3, that others mention.

Cheers...

Thanks for your kind words man!

I'm sorry I can't do nothing bout the
ff issue :(

as for porting themes to kde... sure it
can be done... it's a major pain in the
ass but it's possible :D

Atm I don't see any reason for doing
so tho, because the themes that are available
for kde are like 100 times better that
my themes ever dreamed of being :)

However if someone wants to keep developing
my themes they are very very free to do
so!

Thanks again!

Hehe... You're to modest about your themes. I've been a dedicated KDE user for a long time, but recently I started using Gnome more. Like I mentioned, you're themes made Gnome look exactly how I wanted. There are some very good KDE themes, but when it comes to dark themes, it's not that easy with KDE. I found there's always some minor problems. Especially with programs like firefox (using the gtk-qt thingy).

Sadly I don't know how to edit themes or how to port themes to KDE. But it would be a great thing giving a consistent look to progs like K3B and Amarok in Gnome. But perhaps the upcoming QGTKSTYLE from trolltech will solve this.

About support for your current themes (also used in PCLOS and a Ubuntu variant). If it would be okay with you, then I hope someone would continue development/bugfixes, because the themes are popular and really good. We need em :D

I understand that you want to spend your time with KDE now, but could you give me a hint if it would be possible to fix these two small things myself?

1: some progs give me light dropdownmenus with light text in Slickness. With Slickness black it works perfectly.
2: Checkboxes in slickness black. It's difficult to see which are checked. Perhaps I could use the checkboxes style from the normal slickness theme instead?

Anyway, Thanks for your great themes and your very active effort to help the users. Great work.

Woops... Sorry, I didn't see what you wrote about someone else taking over these projects. Sadly I don't have the expertise myself, but I really hope someone with the needed skills will. The themes are already perfect. It would mostly be bugfixes. :D

Well thanks again man!

well, yeah, there are a lot of bugs in
slickness (and every dark theme here on
gnome-look) because gnome was build
with dark text on light background
in mind,
so if you make something dark with
light text,,, it's doomed, I have spent
many many hours trying to solve bugs
like these, the apps that usually have
them are the ones that are not actually
gnome (gtk) apps but multiplatform
apps, that work on many systems, eg:
firefox (I hate it and never use it myself)
openoffice,vlc,gimp.... you get the
picture.

Some of these bugs I was able to fix
from within the gtkrc (gtk+ configuration code) , it's how you
write themes for gnome (and other gtk
based systems)
and then there was the firefox problem...
or is... but now it's a different one
with ff3 :)

so the only solution I saw at the end
of the day was to make an all light
theme, can be found here:
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/vision+(codename+inspiration)?content=80064
and so far, no one has had a deadly
font bug as far as I know :)

My best regards to every themer who
is determined to make a fully functional
dark theme!

 xfwm4 version?

by redivan on: Jul 4 2008

Currently using your theme on xubuntu hardy and it's got to be the first one I've seen that's made dark a usable colourscheme! Nice work. The wallpaper, too, is excellent though a little too "busy" at times, especially if I have loads of launchers on the desktop.

Your theme doesn't yet have window borders / decorations for xfwm4, only Metacity, so I've had to use the Technix borders instead which look a bit out of place. Could you please make us an xfwm4 version?

Also Firefox seems to work fine without applying the "fix" on my machine. Don't know how, it's more or less a vanilla install, just thought I'd say though.

Thanks and glad you like my work!

I'm on kde nowadays myself so I don't
think I will be developing any more
themes/styles for gnome/gtk :)
I would port it to xfwm if I knew how
tho :)

if you use compiz you can use the emerald
version.

the fix is for firefox 2 and has nothing
to do with ff3... I maybe should
edit the description.

Thanks for your interest man! sorry
I can't help you more :)

Hey, nice theme. I just cant stand that default debian one.

Anyway, do you know of any fix for the invisible text when highlighted in evolution?

Its really similar to the firefox problem you say to fix in the instructions.

Thanks!!

well, the firefox fix is for firefox 2
,ff3 shouldn't have a problem :)

as for evolution... the only fix I can
think of right now (as I have moved to
kde and no longer use gnome at all)
is to start the app with another theme :)

I'm sorry I can't fix it for you.
