 End sound not heard

I was able to preview the end sound in System > Preferences > Sound > Sounds tab.

But when I restart or shutdown, the end sound isn't audible. I have selected the 'play system sounds' checkbox. The start sound has no problems.

I'm not sure about the Yamaha sound module you mentioned. Does it have something to do with my set-up?

I once again had to load the sound in Audacity and export it. I guess Gnome on certain distros (Ubuntu in my case) can be especially fussy. :(
