Even though I've only been using Linux for just over a year, there's still plenty I need to learn. Your chart will help me and others get a better understanding of the 'Big Picture'.

Apparently it was originally a German translation of Slackware. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SUSE

It might also be worth noting that SuSE and RH both have roots in Slackware. There is also another very important early distro missing. Ygdrassil. This is important because it was the first CD based distribution with installer.

Also Gentoo really has roots in the LFS project and more importantly it was a direct split from Sorceror Linux, not an independent start. Both Arch Linux and Sorceror predated Gentoo. I'd put it as
-------->sorceror--->Gentoo
|
lfs ------>
|
-------->Arch Linux

Finally there are some key missing distro's from the east. Turbo Linux (Japan) Easy-Linux-kr, Hancom and Alzza (Korea) (All Red Hat based) and more. Some helpful info available here http://www.linuxhq.com/dist.html old page but still useful for this project

I'm not complaining.. but in my own inept way trying to add to something of value.

nightwriter, thanks for the input! I added Yggdrasil and some others.

Naturally distros "give and take" from each other, but I haven't found any sources on Red Hat's connection to Slackware, or Gentoo being a split from Sorcerer. This story by the Gentoo founder D. Robbins give me the impression he started from scratch after he left Stampede: http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/library/l-dist1.html

I'd love to add some more of the main Asian distros, but it's hard to find info on when they started (and died) and their connection to other distros.

I removed Linux From Scratch from alexdark's original, but I guess it would make sense to have it included. I could need some help with which distros are LSF-based though.

Perhaps it would be cool if the *BSD's were included as well... Any help on that appreciated too.

Those jagged circles are Kivios fault, and they annoy me too. :) With a little restructuring that would be possible, but on the other hand make updates more complicated. I'll give it a try.
